This essay examines the mutual relationship between Milanese skyscraper Torre Velasca and Ernesto Nathan Rogers’ architectural theory. His theory’s major theses, “environmental preexistences” (preesistenze ambientali) and “unity of utility and beauty” (Utilità e Bellezza), were derived from a unique functional methodology. Rogers’ architectural theory contributed to the design of an original “tower” that was neither an example of historicist building nor an imitation of the originally existing architecture. Instead, his aesthetic idea was based on a hidden intention to obliterate memories of World War II and idealize modern lifestyles. In this respect, Rogers’ architectural works and theory were like a palimpsest summarizing the cultural background of Italy.
