Lévi-Strauss’s contribution to structuralism consists in defining society as a system of relations, namely as a structure. From this perspective, Lacan reconstructed the Freudian theory of the unconscious, and Althusser the Marxian theory of social formation. However, after the 1960s, Lacan’s references to Lévi-Strauss’s theory gradually decreased, and in 1966, Althusser’s article entitled “Sur Lévi-Strauss” criticized it unsparingly. This paper considers their “estrangement” from Lévi-Strauss’s perspective as a “symptom” of the shift from structuralism to post-structuralism, and formulates post-structuralism as a theory of becoming (devenir) of structure.
