Yinka Shonibare MBE is a Nigerian artist born in London. One of his major works “la Méuse” was first shown at the exhibition “Prospero’s Monsters” in 2008. In this exhibition Shonibare appropriated the images of modern masters such as Géricault, Goya and Shakespeare to his photographs and sculptures. What does the frigate ship signify from the view of the contemporary and modern intellectual milieu? As a metaphor his representations of ships and fabrics disclose the paradox of rationality and colonialism. Through his works this paper examines the hybrid realm of modernity in terms of art history, economy, science, philosophy and politics.
