This paper considers Okazaki Kyoko’s manga Helter Skelter and analyzes how the notion of the “beauty” has been represented in the “Shojo Manga” which is a genre of Japanese comics for girls. Okazaki Kyoko is a Japanese manga artist, who has first published her manga in the mid 1980, and deconstructed the norms, conventions and textual and visual effects of “Shojo Manga”. Artist’s critical consciousnesses which can be seen in Heller Skelter can be leveled against the notion of “beauty” which plays a significant role in this genre. By examining how this text represents the beauty of the protagonist Ririko, a top model that evokes women’s desire to be beautiful, this paper clarifies the continuity and discontinuity of how the “beauty” has been represented in typical shojo manga and Okazaki Kyoko’s manga, especially her well-known work Helter Skelter.
