Various wave patterns can be observed in riffles. The characteristics of waves are determined by the interaction between water current and substrate conditions, so the difference among wave patterns shows the difference of physical habitats for aquatic creatures. Therefore, if the relationship between physical condition and wave patterns can be clarified, we can have rough image on the local physical habitat. In this study, we observed two riffles in two catchments which geology are different, and conducted hydraulic experiment in a flume with natural gravel under several conditions in order to understand the relationship between several substrate conditions and waves. It was clarified that geological condition determine the gravel structure in a riffle bed as well as shape of gravels, and then the characteristic wave patterns are created in each catchments.
