Coastal concrete structures are subjected to severe environmental conditions, so materials with high are important for reducing life cycle cost. However, considering the challenge of sustainability, new concrete construction should emphasize not only material durability, but also environmentally-friendly technologies in order to reduce the negative impact the concrete has on the global environment. This paper proposes a design philosophy for developing green concrete materials by integrating durability design with sustainability concepts such as reducing CO2 emissions and the use of recycled and waste materials. Furthermore, in order to successfully develop these materials, the needs of the stakeholders related to the concrete material should be considered and accounted for in the material design process.
