The objective of this study is to demonstrate how Japanese-English translation can be conducted in order to reduce the difficulty Japanese EFL learners face in grammar learning. Japanese-English translation is generally conducted after learners have first acquired firm understanding of grammatical rules through sentence comprehension activities, such as English-Japanese translation. Some researchers argue that Japanese-English translation can be used for effective grammar learning and offer a few concrete teaching ideas. Referring to these studies, and to the learning theory of cognitive psychology, the present study attempts to create a more effective teaching method to reduce difficulties in grammar learning. The target grammatical structure in this paper is a sentence containing a relative adverb, considered to be the most difficult relative clause sentences.
