In order to increase the amount of children’s intake of the school lunch, a nutrition education program was implemented at a primary school. This study is the result and the discussion of the effect of the practice. The subjects were 71 Grade 4, and 74 Grade 6 schoolchildren of one of the public schools in Tsurugashima City, Saitama prefecture. All of them took an about 10-minute-long nutrition education class once every other week, for 6 lessons in total, between late May and late October, 2007. The results were as follows.
(1) Many Grade 4 children in the experiment group learned much about food and school lunch through the nutrition education lessons. Moreover, they began to be grateful to those who produce or provide food.
(2) Many of Grade 6 children in the experiment group also realized the purpose of the school lunch clearly, and became thankful to those who produce or provide food.
(3) Although the total length of time spent for the nutrition class was not much, the regular implementation of the practice program was effective in attracting children’s attention and interest towards food or school lunch, even to have feeling of appreciation towards those who produce or prepare the meals for them.
(4) It is essential to continue this type of nutrition education practice program, in order to promote the net amount of children’s intake of school lunch.
