The acantholytic variety of squamous cell carcinoma consisits of tubular and alveolar lumina lined with one or several layers of epithelium. In our report, the clinical and histological features of 6 cases of sqamous cell carcinomas developing on dorsal aspect of the foot are described. Five of the 6 cases were histologically prooven to be acantholytic sqamous cell carcinomas, and 4 of them had extensive areas of acantholytic changes. Among 5 patients there was metastasis to regional lymph node in one patient which led to the death of the patient.
Acantholytic squamous cell carcinoma, which is often attributed to solar damage, has previously been described mainly in the head and neck regions in persons who spent considerable time outside. Our report is the second describing of this entity on the dorsal foot in Japan.
