The current reality of the business of rural tourism in Japan has not been fully disclosed despite the growing recognition of rural tourism. Thus, this paper clarified the present status of the business of Japanese rural tourism and estimated the direct economic impact focusing on registered farmhouse accommodations that offer programs of agricultural, forestry and fishery experiences, which is a unique feature of Japanese rural tourism. First, the stage of Japanese rural tourism is defined as being in transition from the old type to the new type because the custom of taking consecutive weeks of holiday has not yet been established socially and the demand has not matured. Second, the estimated direct economic impact was a little over 10 billion yen with a present guest occupancy rate of 14.1% of the farmhouse accommodations. Third, reducing seasonality and raising the occupancy rate should be undertaken to attract day trippers and create year round experience programs.
