The zoeal stages of development of two spot-pattern morphs of Neopetrolisthes maculatus (H. Milne Edwards, 1837), and of N. spinatus Osawa and Fujita, 2001, are described and illustrated on the basis of laboratory-reared materials. The two morphs of N. maculatus do not show any significant morphological differences in their zoeas, but N. spinatus can be distinguished from N. maculatus throughout the zoeal phase by the number of short setae on the dorsal surface of the abdominal somites. Zoeas of Neopetrolisthes resemble those of Petrolisthes and fit in Osawa's Group 4. Although a bifid lateral spine on the telson is seen in the first zoea of Neopetrolisthes species, as well as some species of Petrolisthes Group 4, Neopetrolisthes is distinguished from the latter group by the setation of the third endopodal segment of the second maxilliped throughout the zoeal phase and that of the third endopodal segment of the first maxilliped in the first zoea. These differences support the generic status of Neopetrolisthes.
