According to Kamiya (1916), who reported the characters of the pelagic eggs and youngs of the various species of fishes, the distinguishing Japanese sardine (Sardinia melanosticta) from Japanese gizzard shad (Clupanodon punctatus) is impossible in the eggs of early developmental stage. The present auther has been studied the identification of the eggs of both species and found out that they are easily distinguished by the following characters, i. e. the size of divided masses of yolk in Japanese sardine is evidently smaller than that of the other species mentioned.
