A number of Crucian carp were kept unfed during a long winter season and divided into two groups. One group of fishes were killed promptly, and the other fishes bad been subjected to exhaustion of strength before they were killed. Fatigued muscles were found soon after rigor mortis to produce smaller amount of lactic acid and to have higher value of pH than the control. It appears that fatique as well as rigor mortis have nothing to do with buffer action of the muscle.
