The relationship between thiaminase production and the amounts of thiamine or its precursors in culture medium was investigated using Clostridium thiaminolyticum D-9 as a test organism. Thiaminase production was increased with the rise of the amount of thiamine in the culture medium, whereas the growth was constant or decreased. The amount of thiamine in the bacterial cells was also increased with the rise of the vitamin in the medium. The effect of thiaminase production by thiamine precursor was tested. Amoung the derivatives tested, the effect of 4-aminopyrimidines was the most remarkable, and 4-hydroxypyrimidines and the thiazole moiety of thiamine were without effect.
