Applied the ointment mixed with high concentration of dicarbethoxythiamine (DCET) to albino rat, rabbit and man cutaneously, the significant increase of thiamine level in blood and urine was observed, while thiamine hydrochloride could hardly be absorbed cutaneously. Ointment including 10% DCET was most stable and its cutaneous absorption was excellent. Hydrophilic ointment was more applicable than absorption ointment, and hydrophilic vaseline and ointment mixed with DCET-base was more efficient than with DCET-HCl. After application of 10-30% DCET-HCl ointment on the plucked skin of rats, the thiamine levels of skin, liver, kidney, and muscle were considerably high as compared with the controls. The histochemical investigation on the skin treated with DCET ointment showed the massive concentration of thiamine around the hair follicles.
