The effects of O, S-diacetyl thiamine (DAT) and dibenzyl thiamne (DBT) on the pieces of excized small intestine of the albino rat were examined. The addition of DAT to the suspension with intestines gives rise to contractions, but has no effect on those pretreated with atropine. The contraction are stronger when choline and DAT are given simultaneously, and glutathione and cysteine also have the same effect. Thiamine has to some extent a suppressing effect on the contraction of intestinal loops with acetylcholine, but DAT and thiamine-alkyldisulfide have no effect. The addition of DBT to the suspension of intestines results in relaxation and the responsibility of the intestine to acetylcholine, histamine or pituitrine is decreased.
