The oral administration of toxopyrimidine (2-methyl-6-amino-5-hydroxymethylpyrimidine) to mouse causes a specific convulsive fit. This toxic action is prevented by a preliminary administration of 2-methyl-6-hydroxy-5-hydroxymethylpyrimidine (DOP) or any of B_6-group vitamins. The activity of these atoxopyrimidine substances could be explained by the biological antagonists as shown in the chemical structures below. [chemical formula] The superiority of pyridoxin to pyridoxamine in atoxopyrimidine activity might be understood also by these chemical structures.
