A total of 1,162 students were surveyed regarding their awareness of folic acid using a set of questionnaires before and after the lecture (before the lecture: 4-choice selection system and description, after the lecture: 5-choice selection system and description). After the lecture, there were a significant increases (p<0.05) in the percentages of students who chose answers indicating awareness of the following folic acid-related terms and concepts compared to the baseline values (pre- vs. post-lecture values in parentheses): folic acid (45.4 vs. 93.9%), neural tube defects (16.3 vs. 87.3%), and the relation of folic acid with neural tube defects (9.2 vs. 84.1%). The response rates for a question regarding advice to others with free description (11.4 vs. 47.8%) suggested that the lecture was effective in improving students' awareness of folic acid.
