Aniline reacts with diketene, in the presence of a basic catalyst like triethylamine and pyridine, to afford acetoacetanilide (IIa) and 1-phenyl-3-acetyl-6-methyl-2, 4(1H, 3H)-pyridinedione (IIIa). Similarly, para-substituted anilines like anisidine, toluidine, p-bromoaniline, and ethyl p-aminobenzoate, also gave compounds of III type besides acetoacetate. However, p-nitroaniline gave N-(4-nitrophenyl)-2, 6-dimethyl-4-pyrone-3-carboxamide (IVg), an isomer of the III-type compound.
