Phenyl ether of eugenol was reduced with metallic sodium in liquid ammonia to give 1-(m-methoxyphenyl)-1-propene (III). Synthesis of 1-(m-methoxyphenyl)-2-propanone (VI) from (III) via 1-(m-methoxyphenyl)-2-nitro-1-propene was examined. The reaction of performic acid with III followed by treatment with acid also gave VI, though in an unsatisfactory yield.
