It has been found that betaines, inner salts of quaternary ammonium amino acids, could not be absorbed by strongly basic anion exchange resin (OH form) and weakly acidic cation exchange resin (H form). With these properties of betaines, extra pure free betaines can be easily prepared in almost quantitatively from betaine hydrohalides prepared by the action of trimethylamine on halogeno-carboxylic acids or by methylation of amino acids.
