Application of alkylmagnesium halide to phenanthridine (IV) results in the formation of 6-alkyl-5, 6-dihydrophenanthridine (V) (Table I). Heating of V with picric acid results in its oxidation to 6-alkylphenanthridine (I) (Table II). Application of monoperphthalic acid to I gives the corresponding 5-oxide (VI) (Table III).
