A newly precoated plate for thin-layer chromatography (TLC) was prepared from aluminum oxide-fused glass powder mixture. Because this sintered glass plate does not contain any organic binder, it is not charred under any drastic conditions, i. e. by heating the plate after spraying corrosive reagents such as sulfuric acid, chromic acid mixture, trichloroacetic acid, antimony trichloride, etc. By using this new plate, thin-layer chromatographic separation of various organic compounds such as azo dyes, cardiac glycosides, and genins, and alkaloids was studied, and it was found that this plate gave a good reproducibility of separation, as reliable as the commercial precoated plate such as Merck's product. The separation behavior of this plate was similar to that of a mixed layer of aluminum oxide and kieselguhr. This plate is mechanically stable, heat stable, and acid resistant. Moreover, it can be repeatedly used by soaking the chromatogram into a cleaning solution.
