Objective: The aim of this study was to improve the bioactive characteristics of glass ionomer cement (GIC). We developed a novel GIC that releases ions different from conventional GIC, and investigated its compressive strength and ion release. Methods: We used the novel GIC with adjusted amounts of calcium glass and zinc-fluoride glass. The compressive strength of the novel GIC and the amounts of ion release of calcium, fluoride and phosphate were measured, and the results compared with those for conventional GIC (Fuji Ⅶ). Results: In the measurement of compressive strength, the novel GIC showed similar strength to Fuji Ⅶ, and no significant difference was observed even after 1 month. The amounts of ion release from the novel GIC were higher than those of Fuji Ⅶ, when immersed in an acidic environment. Significance: The novel GIC showed high ion release and similar compressive strength as conventional GIC, suggesting that it could be applied as an excellent filling material.
