Most of the existing methods to assess seismic risk cannot explain that some district improvements have no effect to the improvement of the seismic risk of the district, although planners expect that they may decrease the risk. However, a method to evaluate effect of the improvement is essential in process of urban improvement activities for disaster mitigation. On this study, we developed the seismic assessment system for district improvement plans focusing on fire spread hazard and difficulty of firefighting. As a result, we demonstrated the existence of their effect quantitatively.

This paper describes about a study on manpower of multiple dwelling house construction works. The authors classified construction laborers to 5 groups, laborers for temporary works, foundation & piling works, framing works, finishing works and M & E works. Surveying and analyzing of 30 construction works, it is found that there are typical patterns on each working-groups. The authors modify these patterns to simple models for each working-groups. Finally the easy method to estimate laborer's numbers on construction schedule is proposed.

This study shows how to build the shelter of Dashi, a float. In Edo period, the main event in Tenka-matsuri was a parade of splendid Dashi. In Meiji period, though, people stopped parading Dashi as time went by, and began to decorate them. The shelters are usually 3.6m wide, 5.4m deep, and 9m high. To build them, the method of log scaffolding was adopted, as steel was not common at the moment. This study recodes the interview of Kounosuke Inagaki, who, using the method, had build many shelters of Dashi and Okariya of Mikoshi, and aims to preserve the traditional method.

Ecole Franchise d'Extreme-Orient (EFEO) has made restoration in Angkor monuments since 1907 and recorded a lot of documentary about the causeway of Angkor Wat in Rapport sur les travaux executes dans le groupe d'Angkor. EFEO made a part restoration, not all, the southern side of the causeway of Angkor Wat in the 1960s. The remained part, the northern side, is now making restoration and researched here at the same time in order to make the structure of the causeway of Angkor Wat clear in view of masonry technique. The results had a lot of respects through dismantling and excavation, taking a data about structure problems and show us that Khmer engineers had many experience, knowledge and a skillful technique handling with Stones including soil improving to prevent the western causeway from rains.

The modern preservation system of the United States was created by the enforcement of the National Preservation Act in 1966. Professionals from various new fields are being considered in the Qualification Standards undergoing revision. Preservation education at graduate level which has been continued for more than 30 years is coming of age, reflecting trends of involving professionals from interdisciplinary fields. This paper aims to summarize the present status of preservationist qualifications in the U.S. Presently, qualifications of preservation professionals in Japan are being sought after, and the knowledge of the conditions in the U.S. gives us numerous discussions to consider, in creating our own requirement standards.

The requirement of rearing of the technician who has advanced execution control technology has been rising. Kyushu Polytechnic College has established new curriculum in last year. This study is written about the situation and process of shelters after Turkish earthquake 1999. The characteristic of post-quake life is that residents used tents on a long-term basis in a temporary evacuation places. Tents being supplied can be mainly divided into three categories. 1 Tents or barracks built by individuals and located nearby original housings. 2 Tent villages that are approximately over ten units or hundred units built in parks or next to public facilities and are under public life. 3 Army or public sector provided a lot of tents on the public space. The temporary-housing supply plan has three characteristics, which are : 1 Great scale temporary housing cities are constructed. 2 Temporary-housing plan is made with consideration of community facilities including building arrangement plan, primary schools, shopping streets and etc. 3 Various temporary-housing supplying plan.
