Atomic Force Microscopy has become a powerful tool in the fields of biophysics and biophysical chemistry. A number of biological samples have been imaged at high resolution by AFM. One of the problems of imaging biological samples with AFM is the lack of specificity, and the need for a specific labeling technique for AFM has been recognized. Immuno-gold labels in combination with AFM have been developed for that purpose. However, the colloidal gold labels can hardly be discriminated from the globular protrusions of the cell membrane.
In this paper, a numerical template-matching method was developed to discriminate the colloidal gold label from the globular protrusion. By applying this method to sheep erythrocytes labeled with 10 nm colloidal gold conjugated antibody on the surface, the position of the colloidal gold label corresponding to the antigen could be determined. This method will be useful for discrimination of a cell surface antigen by AFM.

Bacillus is known to form a giant colony of various morphological patterns reflecting growth conditions, such as nutrient concentrations and agar solidity. When Bacillus circulans (B. circulans) was cultured on an agar medium, its colony showed isotropic and anisotropic fractal growth on flat and slant media, respectively. Quantitative analysis by the box-counting method showed a medium-thickness dependent fractal similarity in the anisotropic pattern. These various morphological patterns of the B. circulans colony seem to be correlated to the nutrient abundance per area. This shows that the slant agar culture is useful for the study of the correlation between bacterial growth, especially multicellular behaviors of bacteria, and nutrient abundance.

A medical image processing system was designed and implemented for visualization and quantification of a human brain. The system, including a medical image database management system (DBMS) and database, can perform image registration, ROI (region of interest) analysis, and image visualization. The software processes anatomical and functional images as input data, and provides visual and quantitative results. Images and quantified data, including input and processed data, predefined as several data types, are added to the database by the DBMS for further processing. In the experiment, the ROI analysis for normal cases and cases of tumor, Parkinson's disease, and depression showed that the system could be a useful tool for morphometric and functional analysis of a human brain.
