In the globally connected world, global engineers need not only knowledge in their majors but also global competency. International exchange programs in global engineering education prepare the future engineers to understand a variety of cultures and interact within a culturally diverse and globally interconnected world. Some international exchange programs at Hachinohe National College of Technology are introduced here.

The material design of the IFMIF liquid lithium pipe in Japan consists of SUS316L. SUS316L part of the liquid lithium pipe is welded with the target assembly made of SUSU316L. Since the target assembly is operating under a high temperature and strength neutron irradiation condition (50 dpa / year), it is important to perform mechanical tests for these welds in engineering design of IFMIF. This research tested the high temperature materials properties and evaluated basic material properties of the weld. I did not find any harmful weld defect in the weld. In hardness test, the distribution of different hardness was shown by welding speed. In High Temperature Tensile Test, the tensile properties of the weld were equal to a base metal. In High Temperature Fatigue Test, The fatigue limit became 280 MPa.

The anti-genotoxicity effect of aqueous extracts of Connarus ruber cortex was studied in cultured human cells and mice. Connarus extract decreased bi-nuclei cells with micronuclei (MNBNC) significantly in NER-proficient WTK1 cells that were exposed to MNU, MMC, or UVC and in NER-deficient XPL3KA cells (that is, in XP-C) that were exposed to MNU or MMC, but not UVC. The genotoxicity-suppressing effect was further studied by the comet assay. Connarus extract decreased DNA migration significantly in WTK1 cells that were exposed to MNU or UVC and in XPL3KA cells that were exposed to MNU but not UVC. In WTK1 cells, in contrast, DNA migration increased with the extract in the presence of DNA repair inhibitors (araC and HU), suggesting that the anti-genotoxic potential is due to an enhanced incision step of global genome repair (GGR) subpathways in NER. The anti-clastogenic effect of Connarus extracts was examined in mice using a micronucleus assay. ICR male mice that received Connarus extract from drinking water for 1 - 2 weeks were exposed to cigarette mainstream smoke with interval of 24 h for 1 week. The frequency of micronucleus decreased significantly in rats received Connaraus extract, showing that Connarus extract has in vivo anti-genotoxic potential caused by inhalation of cigarette smoke.

Purification of EPA (Eicosapentaenoic acid) ethyl ester, obtained from a mid-gut gland of scallop, was performed using supercritical carbon dioxide. EPA is effective in preventing the development of thrombotic and arteriosclerotic diseases. The crude mid-gut gland was homogenized and freeze-dried. The supercritical carbon dioxide extraction of triglycerides from the freeze-dried mid-gut gland was carried out at 20.0 MPa and 35 °C.
Fatty acids, obtained from the extracted triglycerides, were esterified with ethanol. EPA ethyl ester in the mixture of fatty acid ethyl esters was purified using supercritical carbon dioxide. The maximum extraction yield of all the fatty acid ethyl esters was 83.8 %. The purified EPA ethyl ester was analyzed by gas chromatograph mass spectrometry.
The maximum amount of the purified EPA ethyl ester was found to 92.6 %.

Corrosion behavior of various metal tubes was studied under pressure of 40 MPa and at temperatures of 400 °C by means of supercritical water quick-heating and rapid-quenching micro-reaction system. The reaction tubes for nitric acid corrosion test were made by SUS316, Inconel 625, and double-layered Inconel 625 with titanium inner layer tube. The concentration of various metals in the effluent were monitored by ICP-AES.
Surface observations for the reaction tube are archived by optical microscopy. The concentration of the metals in the effluent depend on the reaction time decreased exponentially, because of the growth of corrosion-resistant metal oxide layer. Quite low corrosion rate against nitric acid was observed by titanium in the double-layered tube.
However, an end-of-tube elusion was observed in the case of the Inconel supported titanium tube.

" The 2011 off the Pacific coast of Tohoku Earthquake" occurred on March 11th in 2011 classified 9.0 in moment magnitude. Due to the earthquake, extensive crustal deformations were observed both the ground and bottom of Pacific Ocean surrounding the focal region. This research divides this earthquake motion for each periodic band by the acceleration response spectrum analysis to make sure what damage caused by earthquake motion. Most of all observation points predominant period show lower than 1sec. And then, we plot the outline of the focal area and draw radial lines to study the acceleration response spectrum transition influenced by the natures of the soil. The weak ground areas, like banking or sandy soil areas, increase the acceleration response spectrum period more than 0.5 sec. Conversely, the strong ground area, likely be made of rock, decrease acceleration response spectrum. On the other hand, we compared the analyzed data with the designed ground motion mentioned in Public Interest Incorporated Association Japan Road Association, Specifications for highway bridges part V. between less than 0.5 sec. period, acceleration response spectrum over the designed ground motion near the focal area observation points.

Recently, the industrial society has a strong demand for the human resource development of practical engineer. However, in higher education institutions, practice and experiment are conducted with the hope that the student acquire ability of data processing methods and measurement techniques, or understand deeply the knowledge by comparison of both theoretical and experimental study. In this study, we developed teaching materials with the theme of the Pico Hydroelectric Power Generator. We created the experimental device that had a model of the vertical axis cross-flow water turbine. We analyzed the performance of this device. As a result, it succeeded in development of new teaching materials for problem-based learning.
