To explore characteristics of effective English classes for students majoring in physical education (henceforth, PE students), questionnaire research on students’ motivation for studying English was conducted, and the differences between PE students and non-PE students were examined. For PE students, it was observed that various approaches, such as using materials and tasks related to sports and developing communication activities based on concrete situations, contribute to improving their motivation for studying English. Furthermore, three English class practices were described and analyzed to find effective characteristics. Some of these characteristics were ones that were identified through the questionnaire research.

Pronunciation knowledge is fundamental to improving listening skills; however, it is often neglected by Japanese learners of English. This study involved technical college students enrolled in a three-week TOEIC preparatory course. It investigates the impact of using dialogic pronunciation practice on TOEIC listening comprehension scores. The results show that the experimental group, which consisted of students engaged in dialogic pronunciation practice, had higher gains in listening scores than those students conducting pronunciation practice individually.

Most remedial English classes at Japanese universities focus on grammar. These grammar classes often consist of 1) a grammar explanation, 2) grammar exercises, and 3) answer check. This paper compares four different methods of checking students’ answers: 1) students checking their answers in groups, 2) students writing their answers on the blackboard, 3) the teacher checking students’ answers individually (tutoring), and 4) the teacher projecting answers on the screen. The students were asked which method they preferred and which method they believed was the most effective in learning the class content. The results showed that 3) tutoring was preferred and thought to be the most effective method by the students.
