Seasonal variation of spring water chemistry was investigated to clarify the source of arsenic in groundwater in the Todoromi area, northern part of Osaka Prefecture. Hostrocks of the spring waters are mainly composed of Mesozoic to Paleozoic sedimentary rocks. Total arsenic concentration of the spring waters ranges from 2 to 54μg/l. Water compositions are mainly controlled by the rates of chemical weathering in the Kamitodoromi area. Microbial activity in the soil is suggested to be responsible for the groundwater chemistry in the Shimotodoromi area. The primary source of arsenic in the groundwater is considered to be pyrite in the host rocks, since the arsenic concentration of the groundwater becomes higher as the arsenic concentration of the pyrite in the host rocks increases.

Laboratory experiments were carried out in order to study relationships among fractures' geometrical patterns, permeability and tracer movements. Tracer experiments were conducted with six artificial fracture patterns made of hexahedral acrylic blocks and arranged as natural flow systems in fractured rocks. Movements of this tracer were examined by measuring electric conductivity in fractures' intersections. Analyses of the these results reveal that the flow length and effective porosity of fractures depend on the fracture patterns, producing different permeability and tracer plume patterns. Relationship between Reynolds number and coefficient of dispersion from these experiments shows that mechanical dispersion takes place in different types of fractures, as a parallel plate. Factors controlling mass transport in fracture intersections were explained with a conceptual model of streamline and diffusion zone.

Methods for measuring the direction and velocity of groundwater flow are classified into single or multi boring methods. In recent years, single boring methods have been used more frequently because they are more economical, facilitate measurement and provide more accurate data. Where actual groundwater flow in a complex way, however, existing single boring methods have difficulty in measuring the three-dimensional flow of groundwater although they can take measurement for horizontal flow.
This paper discusses the method for measuring the direction and velocity of groundwater flow using a CCD camera and prism to economically and accurately identify the three-dimensional groundwater flow in single borehole. In this study, the accuracy of measurement was also verified based on the results of laboratory tests. As a result, it was found that the proposed method enabled the measurement of the direction and velocity of three-dimensional groundwater flow using a CCD camera in single borehole with great accuracy.
