Desertifi cation is occurring throughout the world. One fourth of the land on earth and one sixth of the world population are influenced by desertification. The promotion of aff orestation which brings about greening of desertifi ed areas is, therefore, an urgent task. China has vast areas of deserts in the country and a country which is severely aff ected by desertifi cation. The deserts and desertifi ed areas in China are blocking factors for expanding the country's forest area and they are major origins of "Dust & Sandstorm"; they are giving negative effects on the country's environmental conservation. In 1989, in Ning-xia Province a desertifi ed area greening project was launched under the cooperation between Japan and China. This project consisted of several sub-projects which were the investigation of forest restoration, application of agro-forestry, and preventive measures against insect damages. This project led to a large scale afforestation by Japanese grant aid, which was completed successfully in 2004. As a result, people are confident that they can push back desert. This article has analyzed the long-lasting project and showed that close cooperation between the two countries has brought successful results.
