To make qualitative reasoning about the dynamic behavior of a target system, simulation-based qualitative analysis has been developed. In this approach, the analysis starts with the initial state and generates new states one after another. A state is determined when every variable is assigned its value. Since a qualitative value is abstract and has less information compared with a numerical value, many variable values cannot often be determined. In such a case, simulation proceeds by hypothesizing every possible new states. This causes the combinatorial explosion of the system states when a complicated system such as circuits is analyzed. To alleviate this deficiency, we propose "Event-Sequence Method" which has the following characteristics: (1) A state is determined only through known variable values. (2) Simulation is performed for each sequence of causally connected events. We also present a qualitative circuit simulator QCS which is based on Event-Sequence Method and explains the dynamic behavior of electronic circuits.

In the process of doing syntax analysis of the Thai language, we found that GPSG can treat Thai syntactic rules in a very simple and compact way using Immediate Dominance (ID) and Linear Precedence (LP) rule. We built a simple GPSG translator which translates rules written in ID and LP rule format into DCG format. We call the translator 'Translator for ID and LP rule' or simply TIL. Besides the general translating function that is defined in GPSG, TIL provides several special formats which enable users to control the translation at the syntactic rule level. We also show that by using this translator we can reduce the rules to be handled by half.

The ATMS is a truth maintenance system which determines what nodes are believed in the current context, finds contradictions contained in knowledge base automatically, and retracts them efficiently. Although it provides a good way to manipulate knowledge without uncertainty, it is difficult to deal with knowledge with uncertainty used in expert system. This paper firstly describes a system called EATMS which is an extended version of ATMS to maintenance truth of knowledge with uncertainty, secondly discusses what are contradictions about knowledge with uncertainty, and introduces two concepts called possible nogood and possible good to make hypotheses about current situation in which the given information is not enough for reasoning, and at last gives an algorithm that selects assumptions from possible hypothesist, and updates them when contradictions are found, or the result of reasoning is not safficient one.

A hypothesis-based reasoning system handles the knowledge-base including complete (fact) and incomplete (hypothesis) knowledge. The incomplete knowledge plays a crucial role to realize advanced AI functions, such as common-sense, flexible matching, learning, etc. Thus the hypothesis-based reasoning is important as one step toward next generation knowledge-based system. In thls paper, an enhanced knowledge representation is described for the hypothesis-based reasoning system. Then an inductive learning mechanism is presented in the framework of the hypothesis-based reasoning. This learning mechanism enables multiple-concepts formation from given examples. The key technology of the mechanism is a minimum generalization extended to the knowledge including hypotheses. The whole system has been fully implemented as a meta-interpreter on Prolog.
