    It is extremely important to reduce amount of using materials for manufacturing industrial products from the viewpoints of not only cost but also recent environmental problems and sustainability. Therefore, in the examination of mechanical properties, it is required to improve efficiency the performance not only by the magnitude of stiffness but also the specific stiffness. The mechanical properties of the shaft coupling with respect to the torsional motion influence the positioning performance of the industrial device. For this reason, it is also important to catch the characteristics of stiffness and damping performance. To satisfy these requirements, we newly propose the shaft coupling having hollow structure. It is very difficult to manufacture this shaft coupling by the conventional processing method, however, it has become easy to manufacture it with the spread of 3D-printer. In order to understand the mechanical characteristics of the shaft coupling, we compared the results of the FEM analysis and experiments regarding a simple static stiffness test and torsional damping. As a result, the compressive properties in the longitudinal direction are corresponded between the analysis and the experiment. Moreover, it is suggested that the proposed shaft coupling having hollow structure can arbitrarily adjust the stiffness and damping. On the other hand, problems with the transverse elastic modulus and Poisson’s ratio in the torsional direction are revealed.
