The author conducted a survey on pediatric general surgical patients admitted to the hospital during 1981 in Kinki district. The total number of patients was 4,145 and overall mortality was 2.2%. Neonatal surgical patients accounted for 6.8% and their mortality was 17.1%. Epidemiologically, it was estimated that the neonatal diseases requiring general surgical treatments occurred in about every 1,000 deliveries. In the present survey, the most important cause of deaths in infants was congenital biliary atresia. As regards the childhood and the following adolescence, the statistical results disclosed that malignant neoplasm accounted for 2-3% in the individual age groups and this was the major cause of deaths.
