This paper examines Japanese learners' perceptions and interpretations of sentence-final intonation. To assess these, two perception tests were conducted on sixty-eight Vietnamese learners enrolled in the beginners' level using variables of three particles and five pitch types. The result indicated that understanding of intonation meaning was less accurate than actual ability to distinguish pitch patterns. The patterns of errors indicated, furthermore, that understanding of the intonation meaning tended to be based on the meaning of particle acquired earlier rather than its pitch. These findings would seem to dictate a conscious approach to familiarizing learners with the nuances of intonation to promote their comprehension of naturally spoken Japanese.

We developed a standard test of kanji which indicates practical ability of using kanji of foreign learners by evaluating various aspects of their kanji processing ability, such as pattern recognition, meaning comprehension, reading processing, writing processing, usage processing and phonetic processing (Kano and Sakai, 2002). Based on the results of the test, various kanji teaching strategies were used in the "Kanji 2" classes of the International Student Center, University of Tsukuba, from the 3^<rd> term, 2001 to the 1st term, 2003. In this paper, the author reports on the outcome of these classes.

This paper aims to show the importance of teaching emotional expressions in Japanese systematic language learning. We examined the numerical occurrence and the type of emotional expressions that appeared in Japanese textbooks. We also made a survey of overseas university students to discover their actual usage of emotional expressions in daily conversation. Based on these surveys, it was found that there were differences between the emotional expressions displayed in textbooks and those actually used by students in conversational situations.

It is difficult for learners to understand and use the expression "Noda". The semantic and functional analysis of "Noda" has not been sufficient in the fields of linguistics and the Japanese teaching. It is necessary to further analyze this expression in terms of sentence patterns. In this report, we propose a new analysis, based on a questionnaire survey of 25 Chinese learners.

This paper reports a series of poster presentation activities for the beginning Japanese learners of Short Term Exchange Program (STEP) at Tokyo university of Agriculture and Technology. These activities are designed to provide opportunities for the learners to act out Japanese through poster presentation of their own culture. Results showed that meaningful interactions have constructed by scaffolding utterances among participants with the use of conversational strategies, and that learners are able to acquire Japanese knowledge by repeating the speeches of such presentation. However, communication breakdown tends to occur when participants have difficulty in understanding the intention of others.

The purpose of this research is to make a list of syllabuses which enables Japanese teachers to provide efficient Japanese instructions for international students in graduate courses. A survey on the needs of learning Japanese was made to ascertain the situations in which international students find the use Japanese necessary and to clarify language abilities and skills used in those situations. From the result of the needs analysis, we specified four situations; a presentation, an experiment, a laboratory, and an administration office, and collected either audio or visual data of the situations. We analyzed and made a list of syllabuses from several viewpoints such as topics, strategies, functions according to the situations. The syllabuses were listed to be able to give some advice to international students not only in Japanese language courses but also in a laboratory by a supervisor or tutors.

This paper aims to examine the learners' speech from the framework of "informative speaking" in speech-communication education that is regarded as one of the valid ways to develop presentation skills. The authors set six criteria are: 1) whether the topic is appropriate; 2) whether the information is rich enough; 3) whether the level of abstraction on each topic is equal; 4) whether the body is well-organized; 5) whether the introduction and the conclusion are functioning; and 6) whether the expression is easy for the listener to understand. These criteria were shown before the speech presentation to clarify the goal. The results of examining the speeches show that the learners tend to be strong in items 1 and 4, and weak in 2, 3, 5 and 6.

This study proposes tree-structured coherences as the standards for evaluating texts, based on the discourse-structure analysis (Hobbs, 1990; Hobbs, et al. 1993; Kameyama, 1999). 48 Japanese and 41 foreign students were classified into four categories (central coherence, same sentence, peripheral coherence, and others), and the numbers in each category were calculated. As a result, there was significant difference between Japanese and foreign students in the "others" category rather than the "central coherence" category.

We organized self-directed discussion activities by Japanese and non-Japanese students based on a Japanese book in a non-formal learning environment. This activity was based on two kinds of students' needs: 1) self-directed extensive reading practice for non-Japanese students who had finished formal Japanese education without enough reading proficiency to perform their academic research in Japanese, 2) international exchange among Japanese and non-Japanese students. We had several discussion sessions during one academic year and realized that this trial was appreciated by both types of students and also motivated non-Japanese students to read extensively. We are searching for appropriate procedures, such as session frequency, student recruitment, discussion session leadership, and assessment of reading proficiency after reading and discussion sessions by non-Japanese students.
