    This study examines Japanese teachers' actual practices of pronunciation teaching and explores how they are related to the teachers' beliefs toward teaching pronunciation. Based on interviews with 12 Japanese teachers teaching overseas, it was found that the teachers' beliefs acquired through their training and teaching experiences have considerable influences on their decisions of whether or not to teach pronunciation and on their methods of pronunciation teaching.

    This study presents testing designed by the instructors in an oral communication class for novice learners. The instructors intended to develop the testing which gave secondary positive effects on learners along with the test. The content of the test and the evaluation items were coordinated with the curriculum. Measuring performances in the test by using the developed evaluation sheet received positive and negative reactions from the learners. We found that testing with the developed evaluation sheet has problems in conducting a reliable testing.

    The collocation patterns often appear in news broadcasts. To find out what particular combinations of noun + particle + verb occur in news broadcasts, these combinations were extracted from a database of 361 news reports. Furthermore, native speakers of Japanese were asked to predict the verb they thought most likely to appear after each noun + particle 10 combinations were tested. In the case of the most frequent combinations, native speakers made correct predictions in most cases. In the case of collocations which contain a particle 'ga', the native speakers showed a wide variation in answers. The results of this study of collocations in news reports suggest that this kind of vocabulary training using collocations would benefit learners if incorporated into listening instruction.

    This paper introduces the video project for a Japanese language class, which is a regular class for the first grade students of the department of engineering. The object of this class is to make the students realize what kind of skills they particularly need to acquire and to help to achieve the development of their abilities. For this purpose, it is appropriate to conduct a video drama project which gives the students an opportunity to use their abilities at most. Through the second term of this class, it is concluded that work with a task-sheet had a good effect on clarifying the process of the task, making a scenario and editing etc. It was also effective to divide the students into several small groups intentionally. We evaluated the class objectively by totalising the mark considering their behaviour in class and their individual work examined by externals.

    In learning language, it is necessary for the student to comprehend the word/idiom sense and usage of the word/idiom in the sentence, the context which allows to use the word/idiom. Therefore, we propose a system where the students could study as they compare the usage of the word/idiom with the others which they have studied, and might recognize the generality or specialty of the usage of language.

    The purpose is to grasp the characteristics in voice of Vietnamese southern dialect in detail. A difficulty in pronunciation was observed in 7 phonemes. There were 4 examples substituted for the phoneme that an uttered phoneme was different from the original in one direction. There were 2 examples substituted in both directions of the phoneme. Those reasons were examined from the relations with the mother language. Furthermore, some substitutions could be recognized in voice recognition system, and it was shown that the method of applying the system to autonomy learning could be used possible as an evaluated result.

    The authors aim to develop a standard test of kanji which can indicate the estimated level of the learners' knowledge of kanji vocabulary as well as their practical ability in using kanji by evaluating their kanji processing ability from various aspects, such as pattern recognition, meaning comprehension, reading processing, writing processing, usage processing and phonetic processing. A trial test has been developed in order to clarify what kind of ability the learners at the beginners' level gain for processing kanji, and also what kind of difficulties they find in learning kanji. In this paper, the authors report the result of the trial test conducted in "Kanji 1" class of the International Student Center, University of Tsukuba, in 2001.

    As increasing more research has been done on the relationship between foreign language learning and beliefs that learners hold about language learning, it has become clear that it is very important for teachers to understand the beliefs that learners have about foreign language learning. In this research, I shall outline the beliefs Bulgarian students of Japanese have about foreign language learning. 35 Bulgarian university students were asked to fill in a BALLI questionnaire, to which some items were added to find out also what students expect from the teachers. The results show that the learning method the students use is memorization with emphasis on grammar and that they depend a lot on the teachers in their learning process.

    We have developed a spell checker for learners of Japanese. The Japanese spell checker consists of two components. The first component detects and corrects spell errors in input sentences using simple rules. The second component compares the probabilities of both the original sentence and the corrected sentence using a statistical language model (ngram model) which is trained by a large collection of Japanese newspaper articles. The spell checker indicates that the word has an error when the probability of the corrected sentence is higher than that of the original one. In this paper, we report the method of Japanese spell checker and the evaluation results of the method for a real Japanese text written by foreign students. The evaluation results show that the method can find out the local spell errors such as wrong applications of verb inflection rules, but cannot efficiently point out the global errors such as wrong usages of Japanese post positions.

    We consider how it should learn for acquisition of better Japanese pronunciation. Moreover, we take in speech processing technology to the system. And the prosody study support system was proposed and technology which serves as a core further was introduced. We propose dividing F0 pattern into a phrase ingredient and an accent ingredient. And a student's improving point is clarified by comparing a model sound and a student's sound with a character.

    This article explains the teaching method using a positioning map. For the learners of Japanese, even in the advanced class, expressing their feelings and impressions seems to be difficult. The authors consider that there are two reasons, that is, the learners' vocabulary of Japanese is limited and they cannot clarify what they felt in Japanese. The map, on which some adjectives are located, has two axes (Warm-Cool, Soft-Hard). The learners plot the images on the map, and can understand the meanings of the words. When expressing their impressions, they can pick up the appropriate words easily and quickly.

    The study examined 'a good language teacher' is how linguistically constructed by Japanese language major students in People's Republic of China. Narrative discourse was collected from the participants and analyzed by a qualitative method. The result presents constructions of a good language teacher. Good language teachers help and encourage learners and introduce useful leaning strategies to the learners. They also provide leaners environments where the learners can practice using language in more practical settings. Critical aspects of the interpretation is also presented.

  • Assessments Used to Show an Involvement in Conversation

    Some learners of Japanese try to use assessments in order to show their involvement in conversations. However, they misuse assessments although they follow the explanations in their textbooks. This study examined the "Zannen desu ne" assessment which learners could use in contact situations with native speakers, based on the analysis of six criteria. We found three combinations between "the person feeling 'zannen"' and "situational territory of 'zannen."' We also found three restrictions in use of "Zannen desu ne": 1) types of former utterances, 2) relationship between speaker/listener and 3) the usage of the final particle ne.

  • The influence of experience in contact situations

    This study examines the difference between the strategies of experience of contact situations and the strategies of native speakers without such experience. The subjects consist of three Japanese language teachers, three professors and three Japanese native speakers who have scant experience in contact situation. The result shows that Japanese language teachers and professors groups succeed in obtaining accurate information, and that Japanese teachers group does support conversations positively and effectively.

    It is necessary to make a systematic drills to learn how to listen to spoken sounds in Japanese to increase student listening ability. We have to made such a drill and on researching its effects and resulting problems. The results shows that this practice has some effect on increasing listening ability, but these results needs further analysis. We have found several problems with this practice: 1. we need greater variety of pronunciation by other Japanese native-speaker, 2. we also need to increase oral practice, 3. we need error analysis of the test-result.
