Influence analysis based on Cook's local influence is developed for the eigenvalues and eigevectors of a correlation matrix assuming the multivariate normal variance perturbation. A numerical example is given to show that the derived influential directions are just equivalent to the vectors of principal component scores of the influence functions of parameters obtained by principal component analysis with metric V^-, where V is the asymptotic variance-covariance matrix of parameter estimates. A comparison is made concerning the results of the present and previous studies.

In fitting smoothing splines, obtained as optimum solutions to penalized approaches, it should be useful for diagnosing nonlinear structures if the values of smoothing parameters that control their smoothness can be selected appropriately based on given data. It is necessary to reconsider the procedure for selecting smoothing parameters with restricted maximum penalized likelihood estimation from the viewpoint of the objective of nonparametric regression, that is, to explore functional relationships. The procedure is based on the representation of smoothing splines as linear mixed effect models. However, it takes much time to compute estimates using existent programs. For easier application to various models and efficient calculation of estimates, the restricted log likelihood and its derivatives are derived in such forms that are suitable for fitting smoothing splines, using BLUP equations. In applications to some examples in literature, it is shown that the procedure can give valid suggestion to regression structures as well as error variance structures.

The intraclass correlation structure is often considered to measure the degree of resemblance between siblings. There exist many studies for the intraclass correlation coefficient in one sample and multisample problem. In this paper, we consider testing the following hypotheses: (1) equality of intraclass correlation, that is, ρ = ρ_0; (2) equality of two intraclass correlations, ρ_1 = ρ_2, where ρ_0 is given value and ρ_i is the intraclass correlation of α-th population, α = 1,2. We suggest to apply permutation test to these problems. Permutation test is a nonparametric testing methodology based on the exchangeability of observations. Using permutation method, we may examine asymptotically exact test. By some numerical results and comparison with other tests, we conclude that the permutation tests are reliable and effective.

Graphical modelling on multivariate data analysis uses graphs to represent probability model. They enable concise representations of associational and causal relations between variables under study. The theory of graphical modeling has emerged from mixture of log-linear models in multi-way contingency tables and covariance selection models in multivariate normal distribution. When you analyze fitting graphical models to the data, some software may be required. We develop the data analysis systems of G-GM (gaussian graphical modelling) & L-GM (log-linear graphical modelling). They are very useful and have conversational commands of operation for Windows users. In this paper, we describe a characteristic of their systems as follows. There are a variety of display platforms available such as, histograms and (partial) scatter plots or the like, and commands which produce a graphical display not only undirected independence graphs but directed and chain independence graphs. In addition, their systems have model selection command of the backward method and editing commands of edges for conversational rules of user's assessment. As for G-GM system, there are GFI (goodness of fit index), AGFI (adjusted goodness of fit index) and so on, not to speak of evaluation of models by deviance.

"Free software/Open source" is a concept of softwares that have a great feature "All sources should be released to the public". The development on/under free software has been in progress and we realize its possibilities as business model and developing model. The success of free software development model can be explained by some world-wide developing communities based on the Internet communication. It is important that we focus on the feature on the Internet as a media and the similarity between the community of the Internet and that of scientists. In this paper, we review some developing models on "Open source" and offer their backgrounds, merits, defects and future.
