Modified principal component analysis (M.PCA) derives principal components (PCs) which are computed using only a selected subset but which represent all the variables including those not selected as well as possible. When we apply ordinary principal component analysis (O.PCA) to the same selected variables, the derived PCs represent only information of the subset of variables. This means that PCs obtained by M.PCA are expected to contain more information about the latent structure behind the whole variables than those obtained by O.PCA. To confirm this, a simulation study is conducted in which the performance of M.PCA and that of O.PCA are compared: 1) several 100 artificial data sets are generated based on one- or two-factor model with a couple of loading patterns; 2) M.PCA and O.PCA are applied to the data sets after performing variable selection; 3) the reproducibility of PCs computed by M.PCA and that by O.PCA are measured by the closeness between the derived PCs and the latent factors of each of the data sets. From the results that the reproducibility of M.PCA are better than that of O.PCA for most of 100 data sets, it can be stated that M.PCA can derive more reasonable PCs than O.PCA in the sense of reproducing the latent factors/structures.

As a descriptive method for multidimensional qualitative data, numerous methods were proposed, for example, Guttman's scaling (Guttman, 1941), quantification method (Hayashi, 1952), correspondence analysis (Benzecri, 1973), dual scaling (Nishisato, 1980), etc. These methods aim to give a scale for qualitative data and to describe data structure. Considering the classification of qualitative data, we partition variables or individuals by two steps, to give a scale for qualitative data by the methods mentioned above, to partition variables or individuals by the scale. However the scales obtained by these methods are designed for describing data, and not designed for classification of data. In this paper, we propose the method for finding the partition of individuals or variables and scale for classification simultaneously. This method combines dual scaling and replacement procedure. The replacement procedure uses the algorithm in the clustering method based on homogeneity (Nakamura & Baba, 1999). Applications of this method for data are also discussed.

Normalizing transformations are useful for obtaining simple and accurate approximations for the distribution of a statistic. In this paper, we derived a normalizing transformation of a random variate which has a hypergeometric distribution based on the normalizing transformations proposed by Konishi (1981,1991) and Taneichi et al. (2002). Further, we compared our method with some standard approximations for the hypergeometric distributions. It turns out that the accuracy of our method is excellent in many situations.

The purpose of this paper is to test for proportionality and linearity of the bond ratings data using adjacent categories logit model. In the analysis of bond rating, the ordered logit models and/or ordered probit models are being widely used for credit analysis. Although these models require the strong assumption of the proportionality and the linearity, these assumptions have not been verified in the previous research of this field. In this paper, we tested these assumptions using Japanese bond ratings data by the non-proportional and additive adjacent categories logit model. Consequently, we found that these assumptions were both not satisfied.

The aim of the k-means method is to divide n samples into k clusters such that the within-cluster sum of squares is minimized. However, the clusters generated by the k-means method show only similarity of points within clusters. In addition, it is difficult to visualize the results by k-means method when the number of variables is greater than two. In this paper, in order to characterize a relationship between clusters, k-means method is extended to k-planes method as the new non-hierarchical clustering method. By using this method, we can generate such clusters that show not only similar points within each cluster but also common linear trend among clusters. In addition, the k-means method can be regarded as the zero-dimensional k-planes method. Furthermore, the results of k-planes method can be visualized through the projection on the complementary space of the given hyperplane.
