Energy is one of the most important and urgent matters in the world and in Japan, and then all the people should resolve it. A lecture of "Urban Environment Energetics II" for the part-time students, Chiba University, started in 2003, by one of the authors. The lecture Objective is to teach them the present state and the future scope in energy utilization in Japan. The lecture was done by cooperation of solar architect, wind power consultant, fuel cells planner, ESCO's consultant, etc. This report describes briefly its subjects and the outcome of the students taken the lecture. Most of the students understood the present state of energy utilization and saving energy systems. They changed their ideas* about energies before and after attending the lecture. As the part-time students have a functional of linkage between university and society, to practice and promote renewable energy usage and save energy are expected.

In the previous report^, the multi-media contents to support understandings of the operation principle of internal combustion engine were developed. In this paper, these contents were practiced in the machine practical training subject, and the learning effect was examined by the short tests and questionnaire. As a result, when animation contents were used at the time of explanation, the result of a short test went up about 25% to the case where a still picture is used. Moreover, as for the short test result after Web page access, about 15% of rise was seen compared with access before. The questionnaire showed that these contents were effective in the understandings of the operation principle of internal combustion engine.

It is important to study the responsibility as an engineer to society. Concerning social technologies there are some subjects such as Technology History, Engineering Ethics, Environmental Engineering, Quality Control, etc. It is difficult to put them on the conventional curriculum of the mechanical engineering because of difficult organization of a timetable. It is also considered that only some students can take the lectures as an elective subject if those subjects can be performed. Then, the author have tried to make the lecture of the environmental and energy education in Engineering Thermodynamics considered to be important as a social technology under the ordinary curriculum.

This paper discusses the importance of education of technology for students through constant fountain. Recently, young people who are interested in engineering and mathematics are diminishing because there are a few workshops which give opportunities to learn engineering. So we have the workshops which children easily participate in to give opportunities. In activity like that, how we have submitted very simple assemble-kit called "Constant Fountain". It is written in the ancient document named "Itto-shikyuroku" by Benkichi Ohno (1801-1870). He is an eminent author in automatically moving work called "Karakuri" in Japan. We developed the constant fountain kit using PET (polyethylene terephthalate resin) bottle. First, we report on the responsibility on implementation workshop to reform education of technology. And we estimate the demonstration potential fusing hydrodynamic analysis model to improve.

Buddhist sutra storehouses (kyozos) containing revolving bookshelf (rinzos) can be found widely throughout Japan, including at the Ankokuji Temple in Kokufucho, Gifu Prefecture. In the case of large rotating stages, the stage rotates on a central pillar while being supported by cages and rollers positioned under its circumferential area, but in case of rinzos, all rotation is controlled by means of a pivot bearing functioning as the central axis. This lecture will report on the investigation, measurements and analysis the authors carried out regarding the rotational mechanism, rotational resistance of the rinzo of the Kehchuji Temple (a designated tangible cultural asset of Nagoya).

In the area where electricity from the 1920s to the 1930s wasn't installed, the resident cooperated and did electric business. In Tsukude-mura, Minamishitara District, Aichi Prefecture, a small-scale hydraulic power st at ion was constructed to seven in the village. Ruins at the hydraulic power station such as the water turbine and the watercourse are left at Suzuki Hisao's home of the one. It discussed based on the field survey about the actual state and the characteristic of the power transmission at the small-scale hydraulic power station.

Researching the origin of railway gauge of 4 ft 8.5 in (1435 mm), field survey has been done in Turkey, Central Asia, India, Pompei and Ercolanb of Roman ruins. In this report, Ostia Antica; ancient port of Roma, was surveyed. Many wheel ruts of Roman chariot were found and their gauges were measured. The measured results are nearly equal to present international railway standard gauge. Accordingly, the origin of railway gauge is in wheel rut of chariot at Roman Empire.

The Brunei Research Section, JSME, has been established in November 2003 to study about the history and engineering of Isambard Kingdom Brunei (IKB) and his father Marc Isambard Brunei (MIB). The research section is involved for three years up to 2006, the 200-year birth anniversary of IKB. The main subject of the first year is to study about key technologies of their efforts of tunnel, railway, ship, bridge, etc. In this presentation, the author gives an interim report on Brunei's patents, more than 24, gained by MIB, in 1796 to 1827. The ship's block system (1801) is a famous invention for contributing mass production. The invention of forming tunnel (1818) brought them to a success of the Thames Tunnel in which 1KB had been trained. In order to summarize the relationship between their, technical developments and their great projects, the project progress three (PPT) is proposed here. The PPT is divided into railways, ships, tunnels, bridges, etc, and indicates indicated partnerships with other engineers.

This research is mentioned about the restoration research of the mechanism arts "TOUKEI". The mechanism arts of the name of "TOUKEI" is mentioned in "KARKURIZUI" by Hosokawa Hanzou. Korea and Japan are located just neighbor so close as a thin wear separating bodies as the channel between two countries, however, so far their countries have had difficult administrative problems, then mutual cultural exchange of peoples have been rather limited. The situations are gradually improved as time elapsed. Porcelain industries in Korea have been so famous that have given enormous influence on Japanese porcelain industries, moreover, the artisan societies in Korea are alive. Then, the present hand work industries in Korea have been much interested by Japanese hand work artisan and with engineering stand point. So that a small survey travel was planed in last year to see the present situation of small porcelain industry near Ichon-city about 60 km south east of Soul in Korea.

The Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers (JSME) published a new booklet on March 2004. The name of this one is the "Memorials in Mechanical Engineering -Railway Edition: Electric Railcars and Electric Multiple Units (EMU)-". In this booklet, there are 22 industrial heritages preserving in Japan. This report intends to introduce the planning of this booklet by listing up significant electric railcars and electric multiple units (EMU) to be compiled. The simple robot used with LEGO Mind Storms was produced in order to guide the tooth brushing for the elementary school students. The purposes of this robot are as follows; c in the introduction of tooth brushing guidance, the student's desire to listen it will be improved, (2) the correct movement of tooth brushing will be adequately presented. The robot is programmed for the way to be able to do the brushing operations of rolling movement and the scrabbling movement. As the result of tooth brushing guidance by using this robot, the interest and the concern of students for the tooth brushing were raised. They became to listen the tooth brushing guidance with concentration.

Remote sensing is an essential method to observe large-scale biomass fires on the earth because they occur widely in many places. Annual burnt area reaches about 3.5〜5×10^6 km^2 in savannah and about 0.1〜0.3×10^6 km^2 in tropical and boreal forests. Several biomass fire detecting system by satellites such as NOAA AVHRR, MODIS Terra and ATSR are now working. This paper discusses present situation and issue of remote sensing method by a few satellites. Effectiveness of remote sensing is shown by observation of actual forest fires happened in 2002. Catastrophic boreal forest fires occurred in the vicinity of Yakutsk, Sakha, Russia and these consecutive fires were interpreted well by using data from AVHRR and MODIS.

An experience-oriented safety education for both university students and staff members was attempted in Kyushu University, by introducing a practical education program for company employee designed by a training and education company. In this paper firstly the reason why such a type of education is needed for university is described. And then outline and executed result of the program, which consisted of two experience-oriented education programs and was the most suitable as the first attempt at the university, is explained: one is 'catching-into-the-roller experience' with a simulator, the other is 'combustion and explosion experience'. This paper describes how we, the Kochi University of Technology, educate product design and development using 3D-CAD, CAE, and Rapid Prototyping. In the past, design education using drafters was common. However, 3D-CAD education has become more common due to the recent trend of cheap software and more convenient computer tools. The issues to be considered for the product design and development education relate to selection of development theme and how students can learn by themselves. Haying educational tools such as CAD/CAM, rapid prototyping as well as the software for large file compression and collaboration, the project for product development has been conducted. This reports how we conducted the product development education.

In most of studies on space debris impacts, Hyper Velocity Impact Tests (HVITs) have been carried out using aluminum spherical projectiles. However, almost all orbital debris is not spherical. In this study, we carry out HVITs using ellipsoidal projectiles, and debris cloud generated after the impact is observed by flash X-ray. In addition, comparisons of debris clouds between impact of spherical and ellipsoidal projectiles are attempted. In the present, study, the mass distribution, the spray angle distribution and the velocity distribution are constructed, and the impacts of spherical and ellipsoidal projectiles are compared.

It is important to install a Health monitoring system to detect a damage point on a space structure in case of occurrence of perforation hole on pressurized wall by space debris. We proposed using a resistance film which bonds to an insulated Al plate as an area sensor for space debris impact. This is the monitoring system which uses breakdown of insulation of the Al plate from the resistance film by space debris impact and can detect a damage point with the direct current potential drop. The effectiveness of this monitoring system was demonstrated by the numerical analysis and the pilot test using the pseudo-perforation hole before. In this paper, the hypervelocity impact test was conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of the monitoring system under actual impact.

The purpose of this paper is to predict accurate frequencies of large space structures from the results of component modal tests. We deal with structures such as large satellite antennas, which are difficult to perform modal tests on whole structure. A method, considering the effect of untested components as boundary mass and stiffness, is proposed for obtaining accurate frequencies of a structure. Boundary mass and stiffness are found by reducing mass arid stiffness matrices to boundary degrees of freedom. A tested component with these reduced matrices at the boundary gives accurate frequencies of whole structures. In performing modal tests, it is important how to simulate these matrices as boundary mass and stiffness. A procedure to find boundary mass and stiffness is shown and a numerical example is given to show that the proposed method is effective for predicting accurate frequencies of whole structures.

It is important to evaluate gas leakage through composite materials for the purpose of a substantial weight reduction in expendable and reusable rockets by the application of the composite materials to the propellant tanks. In this study, leakage properties through carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP) laminates were investigated in relation to damages and biaxial strains. Leak experiments with cruciform laminate specimens under biaxial loadings were conducted at room temperature. The results of the experiments indicated the influences of matrix crack developments and biaxial strains on leakage properties of CFRP laminates.

Since Venus has the high-density atmosphere of carbon dioxide, a floating balloon is possible and it can perform various kinds of science observation. An inflatable balloon filled with water for buoyancy is heated by the high temperature atmosphere and ground. This paper reports the thermal and floating behaviors of the balloon predicted by heat transfer and motion analyses. It has found that the balloon can float steadily at the estimated altitude of about 35 km

A concept of rotationally skew fold is proposed for the spinning solar sail to meet with the structural properties. The structural properties of the rotationally skew fold membrane are examined from the view point of packaging properties, deployment characteristics, and flatness of the deploying membrane with experiment models. The results indicated that the rotationally skew fold membrane has advantageous for stable deployment with easy packaging, although slightly higher rotational rates are required for the full deployment. The similarity non-dimensional parameter was also derived with the large deformation theorem of a spinning plate.

In the deformation analysis of the circular plate subjected to pressure, the fundamental differential equation system is derived by applying a finite deformation theory. We formulate the finite element formulation from the fundamental equation by applying the weighted residual method. By numerical calculation, the differences between the plate solution based on the linear theory and the present solution are shown. Measuring the shape of the inflated circular membrane in the experiment actually, the shape is comparing with the ideal parabola shape. Furthermore, we summarize the problems that should be considered at the design of the inflatable paraboloidal reflector.

This paper describes the changes of mechanical properties on PEEK after electron beam (EB), atomic oxygen (AO) and ultraviolet ray (UV) exposure under tensile stress. Tensile tests showed that mechanical properties after EB exposure were almost same as those of pristine PEEK. Radiation resistance of PEEK was so high that EB radiation gave no effect on material properties. Although test peace surface was removed by AO attack, tensile strengths after AO exposure were almost same as those of pristine sample. It was clarified that residual strength of PEEK sheet after AO exposure can be estimated by consideration of thickness reduction. PEEK was embrittled by crosslinking resulting from UV radiation. Applied tensile stress during exposure inhibited the crosslinking reaction.

In Hokkaido, engineers in companies and researchers in universities have developed a small satellite, Hokkaido Satellite, since two years ago. This paper describes a designed attitude controll system based on Hokkaido Satellite's requirement. Bias momentum controll is applied to stabilize the attitude of satellite around three axises. The satellite has a momentum wheel on pitch axis and two reaction wheels on roll and yaw axises. Magnetic torquers are aligned with three axises. We simulated the designed attitude control system in complex environment where there are magnetic field, gravity, and disturbance. As a result, we confirmed the effectiveness of the designed attitude control system.

In recent years, many missions using the small satellite as piggyback are proposed triggered by the increase in a satellite launch opportunity, or the ease of development. One of the most severe constraints in small satellite is the limited power, mass or capacity of various devices. In this research, the attitude control system using control moment gyros (CMGs) is proposed in order to perform the high-speed maneuver missions of a small satellite. A system of small-sized CMGs can provide unique torque, angular momentum and slew rate capabilities to small satellites without increase in power, mass or volume. However, there exists a singular point problem what is peculiar to CMGs. In this paper, we propose a singularity avoidance logic for the CMG system using singular value decomposition.

This paper discusses oh the control law for variable geometry truss (VGT) as space manipulator required to capture space debris. The end of truss is constrained to move periodically. The motion is simulated to synchronize trajectory of malfunctioned satellite, which is usually spinning or tumbling. Control law is also required to reduce energy consumption because of limited resources in space. New control law is derived from the locally optimal condition of minimum energy problem with periodic constraints. The simulation results show that the proposed controller has good ability to reduce the energy consumption by repeating motions.

In solving Inverse kinematics problems of manipulators, we have to do heavy calculation because of calculating about the position and the orientation of the end-effector. To avoid this case, we separate roll axis rotation of the end-effector. In order to reduce the Landing Shock of a Parafoil, flare operation is considered to be useful. The timing of the operation is learned by experience. The purpose of this study, is to present the quantitative relation between the Landing Shock and the height where the flare operation is performed. 3m-span Parafoil was released from the height of 12 m, in which the accelerometer was installed to detect the Landing Shock.

Various types of concepts of the solar power satellites (SPSs) have been considered since the first concept of SPS was proposed in 1960's. All of them were realized by combination of large photovoltaic array panels, sunlight reflection mirrors and power transmitters. These units are generally connected each other by large rotation mechanism which will cause reliability problem. JAXA proposed an innovative concept of SPS using the formation flying technology to avoid the use of such a complicated mechanism. In this study, we will design the control algorithm of the formation flying, which uses a basic LQR. Its effectiveness is examined through numerical simulations, and the feasibility of the formation, flying using the solar pressure is shown.

This paper discusses formation deployment for a spinning tethered formation flying system. This system rotates around the center of the mass of it under the condition that each spacecraft is connected by tether. Therefore the system can achieve formation deployment using tether tension as well as thruster. We consider two types of formation deployment and discuss results of numerical simulations in terms of maximum thrust and tether tension. We also introduce an experimental set-up using two-dimensional micro-gravity simulators to evaluate the proposed control methods, and discuss results of the experiment.

We have collaborated a student rocket project with the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) since 1995 and two student sounding rockets were launched in 2000 and in 2002. The student rocket is designed and made by students during from the planning to analysis. The third launch will be at Alaska in March 2005. The apogee altitude of rocket is designed to 100 km. Tokai student team has made a UV. sensor, a digital sun sensor and a 3-axial fluxgate magnetometer on this rocket. We have a plan to measure ultraviolet ray in the polar region. By UV measuring, we may estimate the ozone density and total ozone quantity as a scientific mission. We also can measure a rocket attitude performance by a magnetometer and a sun sensor as the second task.

This paper describes concept of cold gas rocket engine system. This system in safety for experimental study of laboratory scale because of the non-combustion based system. In this study, specific impulse of H_2O/LN_2 cold gas rocket engine was analyzed numerically using the NASA-CEA program. Chemical equilibrium was calculated in various pressure conditions on the nozzle. As the result, it was found that the specific impulse was increased with the increase in the particle content (H_2O/LN_2+H_2O for weight).

Now, it's expected that inflatable structure will be used in space structure, because it has some advantages for space structure. It is made by membrane, thus it has high level of packaging and lightweight performance. And its simple mechanism gains credibility for deployment in space. Especially, its performance is showed in large-sized space structure. But its behavior is program due to membrane structure. Inflatable beam will have wrinkles when it is given some bending load. And wrinkles deteriorate its stiffness. Thus large deformation and vibration occur in inflatable beam when it has wrinkles. This paper mentions vibration of inflatable beam structure for satellite attitude shift.

CubeSat XI (1kg,10 cubic centimeters) designed and developed by the students in Univ. of Tokyo was launched into orbit from the Plesetsk Space Center in Russia Federation. We got much data from our satellite including the image data as the result of our daily operations. In this paper, we report on the result of the operation of XI, and the status of PRISM (CubeSat II of Univ. of Tokyo) project.

Laboratory for Space Systems (LSS), Tokyo Institute of Technology (Tokyo Tech), succeeded in launching a Tokyo Tech CubeSat, CUTE-I (CUbical Tokyo Tech Engineering satellite-I) on June 30, 2003 by a Eurockot's rocket, ROCKOT from Plesetsk cosmodrome in Russian Federation. CUTE-I is one of the first launched CubeSats and is now orbiting a sun-synchronous orbit at an altitude of 820 km, inclination of 98.7deg, together with other 4 CubeSats launched at the same time. As there is no preceding research on picosatellite's temperature and attitude history for more than one year, observation and analysis of data measured with several sensors of CUTE-I is invaluable. In the paper, the latest results of On-Orbit flight data analyses are reported.

This paper describes an on-board computer system for small satellite using commercial devices. By the recent growth of mobile communication and ubiquitous network, modern commercial devices have high performance in spite of the small size and low power consumption. On the other side they do not have the tolerance for space radiation because of the high-density process and low supply voltage. In this study, we are proposing an operating system (OS) which have not only fundamental functions of OS but EDAC (Error Detection and Correction) functions for errors of SEU (Single Event Upsets) in the kernel level. As for SEL (Single Event Latchup), this system detects the short-current and shutdown the main power supply by using software and hardware cooperatively. In this paper we are showing the architecture of this proposing on-board computer system.

In Nihon University, we are developing small satellite "CubeSat". CubeSat is 10cm cubic and weight of 1kg satellite by using the parts made by the private company. The purpose of this project is experiencing all the process in a design, manufacture, an examination, and operation of a satellite, and mastering the basic technology of satellite development by students doing research and development in CubeSat. We have finished examination of each subsystem of our CubeSat and environmental test. Now we design Flight Model and grand station. In this presentation, we explain particular of our satellite result of environmental test and grand station.

In Nihon University, we develop micro satellite, CubeSat, and CanSat for ground testing model. Our future plan is to experiment of deployment of space flexible structure with micro satellite and to analyze its behavior. Therefore we develop Camera Unit which is high performance and high speed handling for getting the visible data on its experiment. In 2003, September, We experimented the first Camera Unit and got the image data. This Camera Unit was used PIC16F877 (CPU), DMR-C1 (CMOS Camera) whose characteristic is 664 × 492 pixels and auto adjusting faculty on exposure time and white balance. Therefore we can't adjust image data. Moreover to use PIC (CPU), handling speed is slowly (20MHz). So we develop more high performance and high speed Camera Unit with PLD (Programmable Logic Device) and new CMOS image sensor (OV7620, Omni Vision).

The basic experiments have been conducted to develop the staged combustion hybrid rocket engine with two combustion chambers. In the present study, we visualized the flow phenomenon around the orifice used for the flow measurement of the oxidizer N_2O, and the condition to suppress the liquid-gas two-phase flow was obtained. The result is useful to design the self-pressure supply system of N_2O for two-staged combustion hybrid-rocket engine.

The winged-vehicle for the fly-back system of CAMUI (CAscaded Multistage Impinging-jet) hybrid-rocket has been developed. As the first stage, we carried out the gliding test of a Space-shuttle type winged-vehicle. In the test, the winged-vehicle was carried by a radio-controlled airplane, separated, glided and landed. Then, we conducted a launching test using model rocket engine. The results encouraged us to proceed to further development of the fly-back system. As the second stage, we carried out the tests to develop the delta wing assembled to, CAMUI hybrid-rocket. In the wind tunnel test, the aerodynamic characteristics of the delta wing were investigated. Also, the flight performance of the delta wing was checked by the water-rocket test. These results provided useful data to design and make a delta wing of optimal shape. The present results led to the success of the fly-back test of CAMUI hybrid rocket.

The goal of this study is to develop an autonomous guidance and control system for prospective spacecraft recovery using parafoils. As the first phase of such efforts, a parafoil flight experiment vehicle equipped with a propulsion system for running and taking off by itself was designed and fabricated, with the aim of acquiring know-how of handling parafoils and designing/fabricating vehicles. In addition, on-board avionics for measuring parafoil flight dynamics were designed and fabricated. Preliminary flight experiments were carried out in Muroran/Furthermore, a plan of establishing a system for lifting the vehicles up to an altitude and releasing them for parafoil opening and gliding is outlined.

Our handmade 2 hybrid rockets (TH#1 and TH#2) were launched at Taikrcho in Hokkaido on March, 2004. The purpose of TH#1 is measuring the flight performance and that of TH#2 is a flight test for our original separation mechanism without gunpowder. The two launches were successful and these heights were about 350m. We could not acquire the separation data for TH#2, but we confirmed the successful separation by a ground movie camera. In this experiment, students designed, made, fabricated, tested and launched during all of the process for rocketry. In this paper, we report a result for two rocket launches and our experimental experiences of rocket making and the management.
