In this paper, an efficient track-soil interaction model for real-time vehicle simulation is introduced. For the real-time simulation, the model can be carried out with lower CPU power than that required for the conventional approaches such as Finite Element Method (FEM) or Distinct Element Method (DEM). The major features of the model are (i) distributed vertical force under the track to calculate motions and forces of all track shoes and connectors; (ii) consideration of track sinkage, slip and longitudinal/lateral forces by empirical equations such as Bekker, Janosi and Rankine; (iii) 100m square virtual soil bin, which is modeled with several two-dimensional matrices to store the soil deformation and the state history. The proposed model was implemented to our Combat vehicle concept simulator-2 (COVECS-2), which was designed to simulate both of the tracked and wheeled combat vehicles in real time. By the proposed model the COVECS-2 can perform high fidelity simulation of vehicle's mobility at various terrain conditions. The COVECS-2 can also simulate a contact with the soil surface and the hull bottom of the combat vehicle that has large influence on vehicle's mobility. Currently, technical validation of the COVECS-2 is being carried out.

AC motor drive tire-mounted gantry cranes with high mobility and superb maintainability are widely introduced into cargo handling work in container yards. The increase of cargo handling work efficiency and the labor saving are required for those cranes. In order to accomplish these requirements rationally, a traveling simulation method has been established to analyze the dynamic behavior of the cranes with high precision. In this paper, with using the method, traveling simulation analyses are performed and discussed to investigate the effects of lateral slope and friction property of traveling road and also side wind load as typical environmental disturbances. At the level of those disturbances which could occur during in-service condition in container yards, the effect of the side wind load on the lateral deviation of the crane traveling trajectory from the ideal straight trajectory is large and the deviation under conventional PD traveling trajectory control may be beyond the general allowable value.

Various kinds of methods have been developed to climb the stairs. In this paper, the basic structure and operational principle for the lifting machine to lift heavy weight (up to 600kg) such as the elevator rolling machine is proposed. The design concept and the versatile operational control system including the guard system also are shown. The working model composed of three layer structure is made to verify the principle. The trial results showed the good performance.

This paper presents propose of vibration isolating single axle truck for railway vehicle. Single axle truck has several advantages over conventional two axles truck in decreasing weight and curve performance. However, it was said that single axle truck is necessary to improve the isolation performance. Authors proposed new concept single axle truck adding pitching degree of freedom to improve isolation performance in preview study. In this paper, two types of 1/10 scaled model vehicle were designed and made. Test run was done with scale model test plant. From experiments using these test vehicles, it was proved that the proposed vibration isolating single axle truck has high potential for next generation railway vehicle.

This paper shows that the VSS observer has the possibility to estimate adhesion force using wheel slip simulation and wheel slip experiments. The brake systems of railway vehicles possess strong nonlinear characteristics with variable parameters, such as adhesion force and friction coefficient of brake materials. It is important that the estimation method has robustness against such disturbance and parameter changes, and it is known that the Variable Structure System (VSS) observer has robustness against parameter change, disturbance input and so on. However, there have been no research reports about Variable Structure System (VSS) observer for the brake system or wheel slip preventing methods in railway. Simulation results show that the VSS observer can estimate the adhesion force efficiently. Moreover, it was performed the estimation experiments of adhesion force using VSS observer, and it has been clarified that the VSS observer can efficiently estimate the tangential force coefficient from the experimental results.

Although the weight of passengers can be considered as an increment of carbody mass itself in design of train carbodies, it has been shown that the passengers' mass does not behave as mere increase in mass because of coupled vibration between passengers and carbody. This study clarifies the coupled passenger-carbody vibration, and proposes a new model to design lightweight and comfortable railway vehicles. This paper shows evaluation equipment that reproduces the coupled passenger-carbody vibration, and the experiment of coupled vibration between passenger and carbody with the evaluation equipment is presented. The experiment shows passengers' vibration has a different influence on carbody's vibration by their posture.

The modeling methods as dynamics analysis was considered about the wheel /rail tangential force which affects various running ability of high speed railway vehicles, such as running stability, comfort, curving negotiation, and safety to derailment. In the case of a high speed railway, the driving force which balances to the train resistance is needed, even when running at the constant speed. So the traction force and the spin, in the quasi- state running condition, influence the saturation characteristics of wheel/rail tangential force, and generate the error which cannot be disregarded to lateral oscillation analysis of driven vehicles. Two alternative models in consideration of traction force and the spin of wheel /rail tangential force are devised. As a result of verifying by comparison with a real vehicle run, the necessity of raising the accuracy of analysis further was accepted. Nevertheless, the second method would be fully equal to use as a good approximation.

This study proposes a steering control method for a motorcycle to improve its handling and stability. Steer-By-Wire (SBW) technology is applied to the motorcycle's steering system to remove difficult maneuvers characteristic of the motorcycle. By examining computer simulation using a simplified motorcycle model, the actual rolling angle of the motorcycle is controlled to follow the reference rolling angle intended by the rider. LQ control decouples rolling motion from other motions which effect rolling motion.

If the vehicle dynamics can be identified when the vehicle actually runs, it enables to control the vehicle motion and to assist the driving manuever adaptively. In this paper we try to identify the vehicle dynamics in single lane change that is ordinary driving behavior in an actual traffic. As the identification method, the ARX model with the least square method for the parameter fitting is used. It is applied to the simulation data of the lane change. It is clarified that this method is useful for the identification of the vehicle dynamics from lane change situations.

This paper proposes an advanced control strategy to improve steering maneuverability both on emergency steering and on slippery roads, with the Torque Controlled Active Steering, which means Electric Power Steering with advanced control method. This controller which is constructed based on self-aligning torque estimation and feedback compensation, aims to improve returnability by using the self-aligning torque estimator, that is applicable in various situations. We experiment with this control strategy and it confirms that our controller improves vehicle dynamics stability.

Elevator rope for high-rise building is excited forcibly by the displacements of the building induced by wind forces. The exact solution of forced vibration of the rope whose one end is moving, has already obtained. In this paper, the exact solution of forced vibration of the rope whose both ends are moving is presented, on the assumption that the rope tension and the moving velocity is constant, and damping coefficient of the rope is zero. Finite difference analyses of the rope vibration are also performed to verify the validity of this exact solution. The calculated results of finite difference analyses are in fairly good agreement with the calculated results of the exact solution.

These days, a quiet traction machine is in great demands. Most electromagnetic vibration and noise is originated from combination of harmonic fluxes in the air gap. Space distribution of fundamental and harmonic fluxes was studied using search coil, FEM analysis and equations. Harmonic fluxes including fundamental one were measured with 36 search coils on inner surface of the stator teeth. From this experiment, flux space distribution in each flux frequencies was obtained. Flux space distribution was also analyzed by FEM. These results were analytically checked by mathematical equation. From these stuff, space flux distribution, mode, for various harmonics was confirmed. This result will be useful for quiet traction machine design.

The electro-magnetic device has an electric motor as a mechanism of force generation, and the rotor of the motor generates inertia force because of its moment of inertia. In this paper, the authors formulate the relationship between the inertia force and the viscous damping force quantitatively. And a method for changing the acceleration-damping force characteristic by controlling the current of the electric motor is proposed and its efficiency is verified by an examination.

Experimental investigations were carried out to make clear the effect of control of steering on wheelset to decrease the lateral vibration of railway vehicle running on the track with alignment irregularity. The running experiments used the model bogie of about 1/8 reduced scales were done. It became clear that the bogie lateral vibration could be reduced to the under half with steering control. Moreover, motion equations of control bogie were derived for the simulation.

Some experimental and theoretical investigations were carried out to stabilize the dynamic motions of a vehicle with independent rotating wheels by control of steering on wheels. Scale model (about 1/8) of independently rotating 4 wheels truck with drive motors was made. The wheels steering angle was controlled by actuator using a microcomputer with the information of lateral displacement of the truck. Equations of motion were derived and simulation was performed. In the experiment, the front-rear wheel steering was carried out, and the stability was verified. In the theory, motion equations in expanding the control algorithm of steering angle were derived. And, some simulations results were shown with the considerations of influence of control parameters.

In general, several kinds of curve information are needed in the feedforward control of the tilting train. However it is preferable to simplify the control system. This paper deals with the possibility of optimal preview control for tilting vehicle to make simpler the control system of car body tilting. The control system uses only start and end points of transition curve as necessary information. Here it is assumed that the car body roll velocity is constant. As a result, it is shown that the proposed optimal preview control system can reduce the lateral acceleration on transition curve and variation of car body roll vibration than the natural tilting system.

Recently, research on a conveyance system by magnetic levitation of steel plates has been active. Since the design of its control system is generally carried out for a linearized model, it is difficult to secure satisfactory robustness in the control system. This is because nonlinearity (which is ignored in modeling) and several disturbances exist in reality. In addition, for an actual steel plate conveyance process it will be necessary to develop a control system that takes into consideration various parameter errors, such as nonuniformity of the plate thickness and the associated weight variation. In this paper, we examine the achievement of robustness for thickness variability of the steel sheet using μ-synthesis.

This paper focuses on vehicle instability that is caused by driver's excessive steering on a slippery road. Then we confirm that driver's excessive steering gain worsen the stability of vehicle using model analysis which contains driver model and single track model. Standing of the result, we construct a vehicle stability control algorithm using electric power steering system (EPS) and active front steering system (AFS). It is well known that maximum self-aligning torque occurs before maximum cornering force is reached. Our proposed algorithm estimates self-aligning torque from the EPS signals, and AFS controls the overall steering gear ratio large when self-aligning torque is saturated. The results of simulations and actual vehicle tests show the effect of the control in improving vehicle stability.

This paper considers an adaptive flight control system using neural networks. In this system, neural networks are aimed to obtain an inverse dynamics of an aircraft online and the feedback error learning (FEL) strategy proposed by Kawato et al is used as their learning scheme. In FEL, neural networks are arranged parallel to a conventional feedback (CFB) controller as a feedforward (FF) controller which makes it possible to cover the shortcomings of the CFB controller and improve the whole control performance. Numerical examples demonstrate the control process of an aircraft under various situations and show that the constructed control system is able to improve the control performance by learning the local inverse dynamics of an aircraft.

This study focuses on a hybrid system designed with consideration of closed-loop longitudinal driver-vehicle system to improve fuel economy for arbitrary driver pedal operation. In this paper, longitudinal vehicle dynamics of light duty hybrid truck and driver that following the preceding vehicle are modeled by using experimental data. Then, the problem that concerns with increase of fuel consumption is clarified by theoretical analysis using computer simulation which include both two above-mentioned models, the vehicle and the driver, as driver-vehicle system. Finally, a control method of hybrid system is proposed by considering driver pedal operation characteristics to improve fuel economy in all driving situations.

This paper is concerned with the behavior of drivers of heavy-duty vehicles in following cars analyzed using a driver model. We first focus on a way for drivers to obtain information so that they can longitudinally control their vehicles. The model is used to describe two kinds of control methods for drivers; the first is feed-forward, and the second is feed-back. Using multiple regression analysis, the feed-forward model was constructed taking time delay and the cut-off frequency of information into consideration. A feed-back model for information that cannot be described by feed-forward control was also constructed. Using a combination of the feed-forward and feedback model, a fore and aft control model was constructed, and we found that the driver model could provide a good description of actual driver behavior. Finally, major factors involved with getting control information to the driver are clarified using factor analysis.

This paper is concerned with two-wheel vehicle. The control operation model of human who controls the two-wheeled vehicle has not become it yet clearly. Then, to clarify human's operation and vehicle behavior, the regulating system for the robot that controlled the two-wheeled vehicle was restructured. It was assumed the one that it was possible to do from the control system design to the simulation and the experiment by using DSP. The environment of the simulation and the real system was straightened, and the parameter tuning etc. were executed. The control model of the robot that controlled the two-wheeled vehicle made by using this was confirmed.

On-line flight control system for aircraft with elevator failures is discussed in this paper. Flight path is generated by combining simple paths, such as horizontal paths, descending paths and circular paths. In order to track the generated optimal flight path, control input is calculated by using time-scale separated Inverse Dynamics. In this process, the adjustable horizontal stabilizer is used as a substitute for the elevator to control the aircraft with elevator failures. So, the thrust and adjustable horizontal stabilizer angle need to be calculated by the proposed cotrol law. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is checked in flight simulation. The flight experiment is scheduled in this autumn using MuPAL-α (Multi-Purpose Aviation Laboratory of JAXA).

This paper investigates the individual operation such as braking in the emergency situations on driving. To detect the operation quantity of the individual driver, various kinds of sensors are attached to the Active-Interface-Vehicle that has been developed for a study on driver-adaptive support system. Individual braking characteristics are analyzed and identified to make a driver operation model. By utilizing such an identified driver model, some driver assist brake systems are examined for elderly driver and proposed for ITS systems.

This study proposes an integrated control system to enhance vehicle handling and stability by Traction Control System (TCS) and Direct Yaw-moment Control (DYC) and Active Front Steering (AFS). The micro-scale electric vehicle NOVELII is equipped with two in-wheel-motors at rear axle and Steer-By-Wire (SBW) System. In-wheel-motors torques can be controlled independently to achieve the TCS and DYC. To enhance vehicle handling and stability against disturbance, independent torque control system of DYC and steering control algorithm of SBW is proposed by using theory of disturbance observer. To improve directional stability and drivability, the controller is designed to regulate the yaw rate generated by asymmetric driving on μ-split road. Finally, the effectiveness by integration of these control systems is verified by computer simulation.

There is an automatic collision avoidance system as one of the Intelligent Transport Systems. In this system the automatic braking and/or the automatic steering can be considered. We examine the possibility of the automatic steering and its algorithm in this paper. An application of the driver models that are used for analysis of driver behavior in general is tried for the algorithm of the automatic collision avoidance system using automatic steering. As a result, it is clarified that our presented method is useful for the system.

The longitudinal motion of an aircraft is influenced by two oscillatory motion modes which are called short-period mode and phugoid mode. It is known that the pitch attitude handling qualities of an STOL (Short Take Off and Landing) airplane is degraded as the airspeed slows down. It is supposed as the main cause that the natural frequencies of the two modes come nearer. We have studied using a flight simulator, including the effect of other modal parameters. So we focused the initial amplitude ratio and the difference of the initial phase angles between short-period component and phugoid component in pitch attitude response to elevator step input. The result has showed that the difference of the initial phase angles plays a more important role in human pilot's pitch control than the proximity of two natural frequencies.

Usually a human pilot controls aircraft, largely observing the movement of visual scene out of the window as a visual cue. In the case of windowless cockpit, a pilot observes synthetic image derived from the cameras and sensors that is projected on the display. If the angular movement of outside view is modified and a pilot watches, how are controllability and task performance influenced? In this study, we investigated the effect of these virtual visual cues in flight path task using fixed-based flight simulator. The results show that, the pilot's handling is improved dramatically and the task performance is degraded very small or same as non-modified. These results indicate that flying quality of aircraft may be improved by modifying the visual cue for a pilot without repairing the flight characteristics of aircraft.

The purpose of this study is to analyze human pilot maneuvers during the landing phase of visual approach. The pilot model is constructed by using Neural Network, and is trained with the time history of flight data recorded in flight simulation or real flight. The inputs to this model are visual cues and the memory of column operations. The outputs are the column deflection and the engine throttle position. A Genetic Algorithm approach is proposed to improve the generalization capability of the network by determining the network structure and the initial values of weights and biases before training. Finally, the characteristics of each pilot's skill is revealed by Contribution Ratio Analysis and Sensitivity Analysis for the obtained neural network model. The method was applied to the analysis of real flight.

A CDTI (Cockpit Display of Traffic Information) was developed for a trajectory-based operations concept for small aircraft. The CDTI presents not only the positions of other aircraft but also their trajectories, estimated CPA (Closest Point of Approach) in the case of a conflict, and other related information. Pilot acceptance of the CDTI was evaluated by flight simulation trials. Although traffic situational awareness was enhanced, the introduction of CDTI increased overall pilot workload.

Flight management skill for jet airliner pilots is discussed in this paper. Flight management skill is one of the pilots' risk management skills that airline pilots should manage for flight safety, for fuel saving economy, for punctual flight operation and for passenger comfort. It is also an experience-based skill. To evaluate this skill, experiments using full-flight simulator attended by experienced pilots were made. Severe fuel remaining situation in normal flight was used as test scenarios. Examinees' utterance and limbs' movements were recorded. After the experiments, interview with them was also made. Pilots' actual tasks in a form of time line and their decision making processes in a form of decision tree have been sorted out. The reason why the examinees chose one particular solution is discussed from the prospect of pilots' risk management.

We introduce a task analysis system for enroute air traffic control based on ESDA (Exploratory Sequential Data Analysis). The system integrates and synchronizes data from enroute simulator then visualizes them in various ways, such as "illustration of flight route and instruction timing on map" and "state chart of aircraft under control". Data in this system consists of movie file of RDP radarscope, communication between controller and pilot, output from real-time instruction recording software and simulator log file which contains flight plan and position of aircraft and pilot's input. Example of controller's taskload analysis using this system is shown and the result is examined for taskload modeling.

Accelerator control was classified by control target as active control, passive control and neutral. It was clear that active control was most participating process for control target. Next, control algorithm changing was expressed by relationship between even control process and relative velocity. Therefore, using a neural network system, driver's control behavior is simulated by constructing a driver model. And it was found that this model could accurately reproduce driver's control behavior of even control algorithm. After that, driver's control characteristics ware showed by factor analysis method that was used to calculate the contributing rate of inputs for driver's control behavior.

Driver's trust in ITS driver assist system is important in the development of the system. In particular the over-trust in the system may cause inadequate maneuver of the driver in an emergency situation. Driving simulator experiments that force subject drivers to become over-trust are conducted in this research to clarify the psychological structure of the driver's trust in a forward vehicle following system. Multiple regression analysis is applied to the experimental data so that the psychological factors strongly affecting the trust are found.

In research into human-vehicle system, it is important to structure driver decision-making model. We analyze information for driver decision-making in forward vehicle following situation by using Neural Network. In this analysis, vehicle velocity, vehicle acceleration, headway distance and relative velocity are considered as information that drivers can obtain. As a result, we have found that the driver is influenced by the vehicle acceleration, and the driver needs a lot of information in a relatively low-speed area.

This paper describes about development of human-machine interface to an information indication method as a basic research of design standard for informative indication method. At first, problems for HMI have been enumerated, and the method to improve the problems has been examined. Next, situation awareness model about hierarchization of the information are constructed, and examined. As a result, it is shown that driver can recognize the forward road environment condition easily using this system.

To prevent collision accidents in case of the excavator operation, adequate warning methods are considered to the operator and workers near the machine. This method has two features compared with conventional collision prevention devices. Firstly, it has "Mental Hazardous Area" in additional with "Physical Hazardous Area". Workers feel danger in this "Mental Hazardous Area", though no collision occurs physically. Secondly, it is possible to modify these two areas freely in accordance with its work type. "Mental Hazardous Area" is measured by using Virtual Reality room named "CAVE". Ten professional operators have done one construction experiment so as to check this warning method functions.

In recent years, the number of elderly drivers' accidents are rapidly increasing. The increase will continue in the aging society of the future. Therefore it is necessary to reveal elderly drivers' characteristics of braking to prevent their accidents. This paper examines elderly drivers' characteristics of braking, especially drivers' braking time, in comparison of the young drivers based on the data of indoor experiments. We analyzed various factors such as leading vehicle velocity, leading vehicle deceleration, following velocity, following vehicle acceleration, relative velocity, relative acceleration, distance between cars, time headway, TTC (Time-to-Collision) by multiple regression analysis and neural network. The big difference in braking characteristics was not found between elderly drivers and young drivers.

At the present day the number of the traffic accidents caused by elderly drivers is continuously increasing. One of the causes for these traffic accidents is inappropriate driving operation during steering. One reason is the increment of motion when shifting hands on the steering wheel, another reason is a tendency to oversteering. This increment of steering motion is produced by a reduction of the range of motion at the joints, which is physical feature of elderly people. This paper investigates a correction of the steering motion to reduce the inappropriate operation, and suggests a method for the steering gear ratio to correct driving operation. Also, the effectiveness of the new steering system including the steering gear ratio calculated by this method is tested and evaluated.

In this paper, an ideal backward parking to reduce driver's workload is proposed and modeled, in order to analyze an important point for realizing the ideal parking. Based on the analysis, a method to effectively reduce the workload is considered. Then, in order to verify validity of the consideration, examinations of actual backward parking by unskilled drivers are conducted. From these results, we can confirm effects on reduction of the workload by the method for realizing the ideal backward parking.

In order to secure vehicle safety and comfort, it is important to design vehicles in keeping with human driving characteristics. Therefore, it is necessary to clarify the driver's steering behavior adapted to various road conditions. In this research, driver's acquisition information according to low friction coefficient of road surface is paid to attention, and the driver model is constructed. At first, to clarify the main information to the driver on various road conditions, lane changing maneuver has been measured on three kinds of road conditions; dry, snow, and ice surface. As the result, we were able to select the input information required by the driver, and to identify the effects of the road surface friction coefficient on the driver's steering operations. Finally, driver model to simulate driver behavior on various road surfaces by using the information to driver is constructed.

The driving simulator, which is named "Universal Driving Simulator for Human, Vehicle and Traffic Research" has developed. It is designed to measure human factors in driving experiments related to ITS research. 360 degrees-field-of-view visual system provides realistic virtual scenery of driving environment. The motion system consists of a 6 DOF motion platform and a turntable. The turntable provides yaw motion to the driver which is approximately same as actual car's one. The experiment to evaluate the effectiveness of this equipment was carried out. The result shows significant difference between no using turntable and using turntable. It was confirmed that the driving with turntable could be improve the motion feeling in driving on the simulator.

Development of cognitive task model is necessary for safety evaluation of man-machine system. Authors have built a model of ship navigator for evaluating performance, but maneuverability which is an important characteristic of ship is not considered in the model. In this paper, for improving and refining the model, real ship navigation data was recorded and analyzed. In this analysis, watch keeping task of ship navigator in full and ballast condition are compared for understanding effects of ship maneuverability. As a result, the effects on timing and duration of watch keeping by maneuverability are partly clarified. Based on this, the ship navigator cognitive task model is reconsidered and refined.

Besides primary driving task, we used to have additional actions, for example, pushing some buttons and looking for something. Such secondary actions have been the major cause of traffic accidents. We refer to such body movements as physical workloads(PWL) and analyze a driver behavior to clarify the influence of the physical workloads on the driving performance. It is known that an internal force of closed loop mechanism affects stiffness of the mechanism. If drivers maintain the body posture according to the PWL, the internal force to a steering wheel increases. In this paper, we analyzed stiffness of a steering wheel according to the body movement.

This paper examines evaluation of the Driving-Pleasure using biological reaction. Resent years, It is seek for the Driving-Pleasure as an additional value with the inprovement of the development technology. It is a fact that the execution for objectively evaluating such human's puleasure affection is not established. To confirm these, this research is the experiment that used the computer game was done. Electrocardiogram, Breath, Pulse wave, and Electrooculography were adopted as a biological reaction used for the evaluation. Testee's subjectivity evaluation was acquired by the General Affect Scales seat and the questionnaire, t examined along with the physiology index, and the outline was understood.

This research deals with construction of evaluation method for driver's strain usng facial temperature. We have already confirmed possibility of evaluation of driver's strain using facial temperature. However the response speed of facial temperature is not investigated. Then, we examine respons speed of facial temperature. We experiment that subject was heard the loud crash sound and was strain. As a result, response speed of facial temperature was shown. And the effectiveness when the facial temperature was applied to the driver support system was shown.

The paper deals with possibility to measure vital reaction of a driver using reaction force of a seat. It is very useful, if the vital reaction can be measured without driver's consciousness. At first step of this research, driver's breath is examined as an example. The heart beat, breath, and the seat pressure are measured at steady state condition of driver on board. The relation between the seat pressure and driver's breath is examined using the frequency analysis result. Finally, it is shown that driver's breath can be measured using the seat pressure, and also shown the measuring position which is easy to identify.

Besides braking performance, the requirement of automotive disk brake is to stop brake noise as drive comfort, and this is one of important issues. But in experimental phases, to solve the mechanism of brake squeal is very hard, because brake squeal is random phenomenon lacking repeatability. At the same time, in theoretical phases, squeal of brake has studied from a long time ago, but it has not yet been clarified with analytical solution. In this study, to analyze the mechanism of occurrence of frequency of disk brake squeal, the theoretical discussion is conducted by using machine dynamics. Especially, focusing on the stiffness of carrier support part, this paper investigates the relationship between disc brake saueal and the mechanism of occurrence of frictional vibration.
