We have examined whether holding local trainings for Psychological First Aid (PFA) for Children is a useful way to prepare in normal times to ensure smooth “mental care for children” in case of a disaster. Save the Children Japan organized a One-Day PFA for Children Training for child-support workers (e.g., doctors, public health nurses, psychologists, teachers, preschool teachers, welfare workers) in Nabari City, Mie Prefecture, on February 25, 2018. A post-training questionnaire showed that it was significant because it 1) provided participants a valuable opportunity to actively learn about the action principles of offering human support, 2) deepened collaboration through lively conversations among participants, and 3) contributed to community building so that support workers could work together using the common language of PFA in emergencies. This suggests that local child-support teams can be expected to provide mental care for children in emergencies if they undergo PFA training.
