In order to conduct direct numerical simulation (DNS) or large eddy simulation (LES) of turbulent flows with complicated geometry, accurate finite difference methods in generalized curvilinear coordinate system have to be used. In this report, finite difference schemes (FDSs) in generalized curvilinear coordinate system suitable for simulations of incompressible turbulent flow are applied to two types of flows concerned with wind turbine aerodynamics. Although the flow around a circular cylinder is very fundamental flow configuration in many engineering fields, it relates to interference between vortices shed from a tower and rotor blades. Transition eddies shed in phase from the cylinder and the streamwise vortex structure overlapped in spanwise large vortex structure are successfully simulated by the large eddy simulations. The formation of laminar separation bubbles with reverse flow region on airfoil is also successfully reproduced. The mechanism of separation bubbles can be deduced by visualization of flow fields. It was confirmed that the unsteady simulations of turbulent flow, such as large eddy simulations, could be promising tools for wind turbine aerodynamics.
