Welding of the butt joint of aluminum alloy by filler-added laser-arc hybrid welding (FLA welding) method was studied. It was found that the gap tolerance of 8 mm plate could be increased by FLA welding method comparing with conventional laser-arc hybrid welding method.

The effect of oxygen on porosity has been investigated both in laser and laser/arc hybrid welding. The results indicate that the porosity is effectively prevented by small amount of oxygen addition to the molten pool. This is because the keyhole is stabilized by oxygen.
