Microstructure for resistance butt welding of super duplex stainless steel was investigated by means of transmission electron microscopy.
The upset pressure and the welding time were changed and the resistance welding of super duplex stainless was done. As pressure and welding time increased, the absorbed energy was increased. The bonding interface was observed by TEM. As the pressure was increased, the oxide film was moving and new surface was welded.

Three types of steel were studied on boundary condition for spattering by using two pressurizing methods (air pressurizing by cylinder and mechanical pressurizing by screw). Spattering condition is decided by welding current, electrode force and steel types. Experimental results were considered from viewpoint of energy input until spattering.

Ductile fracture behavior of high strength linepipe steel is evaluated by the CWP (Curved Wide Plate) test. Crack initiation from the EDM notch prepared in circumferential girth weld is measured by the AC (alternating-current) potential method. And it is compared with experimental and finite elemet analysis result such as a crack tip opening displacement.

Slice Synthesis Methodology is one of the useful and practical method to calculate stress intensity factor for embedded and surface cracks.
However, the accuracy of stress intensty factors by applying this method decreases in the case that crack edge reaches back surface of plate because slice synthesis methodlogy is established under cracks exist in infinite bodies.
We will present the developed slice synthesis methodology for cracks in finite bodies.

A dissimilar friction stir lap weld (FSLW) of AC4C Al alloy and AZ31 Mg alloy was produced. The joining interface had a solidified microstructure with a large volume of intermetallic compounds Mg2Si, Al12Mg17 and Al3Mg2. The present study suggests that liquation phenomenon occurred during FSLW of Al and Mg alloys.

The friction stir welding with heating made a high speed joining by a pre-heating of base material. The pre-heating was carried out by solid heaters. However it had problems like low heating efficiency, thermal strain and so on. In this study, local heating by a solid friction of tool was examined. The possibility of local heating by solid friction was investigated by a numerical calculation of temperature at several conditions.
