The novel two-step spot FSW technique was applied to dissimilar welding of 6061 Al to SPCC steel. After welding, the Al upper plate exhibits greatly refined grain structure, while the SPCC lower plate exhibits slightly refined grain structure. At the interface of the Al/SPCC welds, a few submicro-sized intermetallic compounds can be observed. The Al/SPCC welds show high tensile strength. The effect of welding parameters on the mechanical properties was also investigated.

An investigation was carried out on the friction stir welding(FSW) of fine-grained non-combustive AMX602 magnesium alloy with a thickness of 4 mm that was prepared by rapid solidification process(spinning water atomization process). After FSW, the microstructure, especially microtexture, and mechanical properties of the welded AMX602 Mg alloy were studied.

Many plate-like imperfections are detected by radiographic inspection of partial penetration laser weld which are formed without co-axial shielding or side shielding in imagining remote laser welding. These imperfections are formed in weld metal. Oxide film is observed on fractured surface of these imperfections. Then, a part of at least these imperfections are supposed to be not hot cracks but plate-like blow holes.

When Al alloys and SUS304 steel are brazed in the air, the firm oxide films on the both surfaces formed become the obstacle against the sound-joint formation. In this research, It is investigated the effect of ratio of the ZnCl2 in the flux to the brazability of Al-alloys and SUS304 steel. As a result, approximately 10mass% of ZnCl2 improved the wettability. The addition of KF improves the flowability of the flux to yeild stronger brazing joints.

Evaluation of emission is important on numerical simulation of GTA process. Emission is given as a function of electrode surface temperature. However, actual reaction on electrode surface is very complex by evaporation and oxidation reaction of tungsten and included thoira or other rare elements. Time variation by erosion is also existed. Temperature effect of Tungsuten electrode on electron emission is considered by visual observation.

Arc plasma profile of GTA welding is much influenced by electrode angle, shielding gas composition and arc current form such as direct current, alternative current and pulse current. And, oxide film or active flux on a mother plate also affect not only fluid metal flow but also plasma profile. Arc plasma profiles in different arc conditions are evaluated by ultra high speed camera and high resolution camera.
