The influences of fixture restraint and/or welding sequence have been difficult to be estimated by inherent strain analysis method based on strain database. In this study, a method for estimating variation of inherent strain distribution according to the welding sequence was proposed and welding deformation analyses was conducted with the method.

When the structures are thin, buckling may happen during welding and straightening processes. Since the buckling distortion reduces the quality of the products and cause delay in production schedule, it is desirable to prevent it based on theoretical prediction. The authors propose methods to predict buckling. These methods are developed based on the concept of inherent strain and eigenvalue analysis for buckling and vibration.

In welding, the longitudinal shrinkage and the buckling distortion are produced by tendon force. In this study, experiment of buckling distortion is conducted and a T-E-P FEM analysis considering large deformation is employed to investigate the mechanism of the buckling behavior. Methods to estimate the tendon force is presented finally.

AZ31 magnesium alloy was welded by double-sided friction stir welding (FSW) in this study. The different rotation directions of the upper tool were adopted during double-sided FSW. The results showed that different rotation directions generated different joint structures. After double-sided FSW, the effects of the different tool rotation direction and welding parameters on microstructure, especially microtexture, and mechanical properties were evaluated.

FE-analytical studies demonstrate that the failure in the overmatched weld for the welded joint of Austenitic stainless steel SUS304A comes from the large difference in uniform elongation between the base metal and weld metal. The mechanical parameters to ensure a failure in a base metal for the overmatched joint are proposed.

In order to verify the fatigue crack propagation behavior on the stress field with variation of principal stress direction, fatigue tests and fatigue crack propagation analyses have been performed. The results indicate that the fatigue crack propagates in the direction which inclines to right-angled directions of the crack from right-angled direction of the principal stress and the fatigue crack propagation behavior could be reproduced.

The laser brazing of Ti6Al4V and A6061 alloys with 2mm thickness was conducted by focusing laser beam on aluminum alloy side, and the effects of welding conditions including offset distance on the microstructures and mechanical properties of the dissimilar butt joints were investigated. It was found that the offset distance had a great influence on the thickness of intermetallic compound layer and the mechanical properties of the joint.

For the indirect resistance spot welding with single side access of the welding electrode, the variable control process of electrode force and welding current during welding, reported previously, was studied upon the test pieces with existing welds. The promoting effect of nugget formation due to the developed process was verified even when shunting at the existing welds was large.
