Japan was ranked 54th in 2022, 56th in 2021, and 62nd in 2020 in the happiness ranking published on 18
March 2022. The WHO-5 Mental Health Status Table was proposed in 1998, as a scale to measure wellbeing; the 2002 PERMA model (Seligman et al.) and the 2021 SPIRE model (Ben-Shahar et al.) were published and used for health residents and employees. Meanwhile, the Japanese version of the Mental Health Continuum Short Form (Keyes et al.) was developed to assess the positive aspects of mental health in a multidimensional way in a medical model. The evolution of the above happiness scores and the priorities that make up happiness (family, friends, health, hobbies, community, food, home, work, pets, music, holidays, and watching sports teams), as well as the differences in values between Japan and the US with regard to these factors, are discussed in this paper.
