To promote sharing of Information among persons in public health, medicine, welfare, and education who are involved in adult speech・hearing therapy,we carried out a questionnaire survey at relevant institutions in the 4 prefectures in the Shikoku region. The investigated items were(1)number of persons in charge of speech・hearing therapy,(2)places where they perform speech・hearing therapy,(3)the contents of the institution,(4)subjects of service,(5)contents of service,and(6)provision of information. The number of persons in charge of speech・hearing therapy was only 78,the institutions were concentrated in urban areas, and the number of private medical institutions was high.Concerning the contents of service, examination and training were mainly performed for aphasia and kinetic dysarthria. The necessity for provision of information was recognized but not adequately performed. To improve this situation so that“patients with speech・hearing disorders can receive adequate necessary service in the community”,persons with relevant occupations represented by speech・hearing therapists should make efforts to solve these problems.

In recent years, rehabilitation for patients with dementia has established its position.Occupational therapists are having more opportunities to offer services to both people with senile dementia and their caregivers in the areas of medicine, health preservation and welfare.Under these circumstances,it is necessary to rehabilitate elderly stage of dementia. The purpose of this study is to examine occupational therapy in day care service which is offered to people with senile dementia in the early stage.I researched dementia symptoms and ordinary daily activities of the elderly people with dementia whose MMS is from light to intermediate and who are receiving day care service in the hospital. As a result,it was proven that MMS is correlated with IADL in ordinary daily activities. It was likely that IADL deteriorated in the light dementia cases. In particular, these was a tendency that the patient’ execution ability like“managing finances”or“taking medicine properly”deteriorated, and that they withdrew from social interaction by reducing such activities as“shopping,”“talking over the phone”or“going out.” Day care service is effective for people with senile dementia in the early stage in the sense of “keeping social interaction.” Occupational therapists are, therefore, required to adjust the environment for elderly people with dementia frorm the early stage and to provide a personal care program that encourages satisfaction for each individual.

Although maximal oxygen uptake(VO₂max)is considerd the single best determinant of one’s cardio-respiratory endurance or aerobic capacity, the direct measurement of these attributes requires elabrate equipment, trained personnel, special knowl-edge,and/or a maximal effort on the part of the subject who is tested. In addit-ion,the measurement is time consuming. The current investigation was designed to examine the validity of aerobic capa-city estimated from submaximal cycling exercise and step tests. The subjects tested were 10 physically active men aged 19 to 24years(21±1).Indirect VO₂max test were selected from those proposed by Astrand and Ryhming,Fox,and Siconolfi et al.,and elgosizar methods, and Margaria et al.(step test). The VO₂max values estimated by these methods, with the exception of the Fox me-thod,were found to have small errors when compared to the direct measurement of VO₂max.The VO₂max values estimated by the submaximal work at one work rate were found to have large errors when compared to the submaximal work at two or three rate of work. Our finding suggest that elgosizar methods be a better aerobic capacity test than other indirect VO₂max tests.

The present physical division between theoretically based academic and practice-based fieldwork segments of occupational therapy education creates difficulties and some students perform poorly during clinical practice. This study explores correlation between academic grades and clinical practice performance. The results suggest that academic grades alone are not effective indicators of fieldwork success or failure.Still more, the pattern of Tokyo University Egogram(TEG)and Profile of Mood States(POMS)patterns may indicate clinical practice success or failure(T.Okamura,1999).As for coming to understand each student, interviews are more important than the use of TEG and POMS.The study results suggest that introspective data of interview can be use within a framework of interventions of students who might potentially fail their clinical practice.

To provide useful information about children with speech-language and hearing disorders to specialists in community health, medicine, and social welfare,a direct-mail survey was conducted for related facilities in all the four prefectures of Shikoku island in japan with the following items:1)The number of speech-language-hearing specialists and the number of nationally licensed ST,2)the locations of facility,3)characteristics of service recipients,4)types of services provided, and 5)communication among specialists. The response rate was 77.9%(67 out of 86 facilities). This paper describes the analysis of survey responses from 31 facilities that have provided services for both children and adults with speech-language and hearing disorders.Primary findings and discussion follow:1)Only 74 STs(68 full-timers and 6 part-timers)who worked for children, suggesting that the number of STs for children is limited;2)most facilities(87.1%)were located in city and surrounded zones.Whereas few facilities were found in rural areas;3)no one was fully satisfied with communication among specialists, implying a lack of professional coordination. It is certainly desirable for communication handicapped to receive services in his or her local community. It is planned that a resourse guide for persins with speech-language and hearing disorders is published for an advancement of the services.

A characteristic of occupational therapy is the variable uses of occupations, which can be used in different locations and as means of nonverbal communication.Providing such a structured treatment is extremely difficult for patients with Borderline Personality Disorder. In such a versatile setting both the patient and therapist comfirm their position and maintain a therapeutic relationship. For this relationship the concept“ma”(Japanese for interval or space)was used to provide a structure so the patient could leave problems aside and personal distance was secured.Even though acts of self-mutilation and acting-out continued,as well as problems of keeping appropriate distance with other people, recovery occured for human-relationships as well as that patient was able to return to live in the community. The significance of both“stucture”and“ma”is explained from the therapeutic viewpoint of self-healing.

A male child with suspected learning disability(CA10:8)was evaluated by WISC-Ⅲ,K-ABC,and ITPA.WISC-Ⅲ showed an IQ of 76 in all tests, indicating a borderline case. The verbal IQ was 66 while the kinetic IQ was 92.The discrepancy indicated kinetic predominance.K-ABC showed a cognitive processing score of 86;the successive processing score was significantly lower than the simultaneous processing score(=99).ITPA revealed that his verbal learning age was 7 years and 7 months, indicating a delay of 3 years and 1 month compared with the chronological age,and the value for the visuo-motor circuit was higher than that for the audiophonetic circuit. These results suggested verbal IL.At present,he is receiving training to improve ability to express by spoken language.

CVA patients that live at home, but their ADL ability sometimes differ between what they can do(potential ADL)and actually perform(actual ADL).Other people have done many follow-up survey reports on this subject, too. In people’s life ADL is a basic occupation. Moreover,it is an activity as well. This activity is an important factor in forming of personality, but the emotional domain is important, too. The emotional domain supports the forming of daily life activities. It is also a part of people’s subjectivity. The same could be said of patients and care-givers.I looked at the emotional domain that forms person’s life.I made an evaluation list of knowledge/skills and feelings of patient/care-giver,in which I included ADL evaluation. As a result I will examine significance of emotional domain in life.

Expectations of information processing education have become very high due to the advent of advanced information-oriented society.Higher education organizations began to practice information processing education of freshmen for the purpose of training in computer literacy. There are many class goals and forms of computer literacy, but student may have difficulty because the class goals are vague. With the intention of investigating about on-going curricula of Information Engineering classes,we asked the students to fill out a questionnaire. The results of the survey show as follows:(1)The student’s desire is to master general knowledge about the lnternet in the classes.(2)Students have a positive attitude toward studying about Information Engineering, because they think that it will be of great help in their school days and in their future careers. It was clear that definite class goals made the motivation of student learning easier.

Audiometric examinations based on various responses to acoustic stimulation are performed in children, but few audiometric instruments present awards to stimulation and response. There are also few systems that can comprehensively handle registration, recording, management, and recall of auditory profiles. We, therefore, developed the versatile auditory tester for children DANA PLAY 9-Z to fulfill the above needs of the examiner and evaluated the conditions for more reliable audiometry in small children.

We report clinical findings in a 7-year-old female with speech retardation showing retardation of verbal expression by spoken language and her course until the initiation of acquisition of spoken language. This case was characterized by low verbal expression ability compared with language understanding ability and lack of will to communicate with other people and objects that is spontaneously acquired in daily life in infants and small children. To improve verbal expression and communication will, speech training was performed using written language as a medium. After training for about 1 year, the will to communicate by spoken language improved, and the clearness of speech also slightly improved. In children with speech retardation in whom communication behavior before speech has not been acquired, but visual clues can be effectively utilized, training using written language as a medium may be effective.

A survey had been conducted for those one hundred and twenty six dwellers living in the Health Services Facility for the Ages on the point of real situation when taking and swallowing for in order to grasp what sort of approach may be required for those patients having trouble at the time of taking and swallowing food. The result had shown that sixty dwellers, about half number of the whole, were those patients suffering from difficulty in taking and swallowing food.No major difference had been observed in the process of trouble, however, while most of the trouble was witnessed in the process of chewing by those inhabitants. When arranging type-wise,in the meantime,it was observed that ten people, the most number had trouble in all processes from that of recognition to transferring to the gullet to be followed by seven people, type seen in the second most number, having trouble in the process of recognition concerned. The result thus obtained had led us to believe that it was important to make an overall assessment on the trouble of taking and swallowing food in an appropriate way by ST,dentists, dental health persons and nutrition technicians since there are quite few issues centering on the process of recognition and chewing. At the same time,we have also come to realize that it would become necessary to keep consult contacts with multitrades involving ST,dentists, dental health persons and nutrition technicians and apply diversified approach so far as health-care facilities for the aged are.

The questionnaire about progress until they enters this institute was performed, to 89 first-grade students of speech therapists, physical therapists, and occupational therapists course. It was 8 month later after their entrance in this institute,in December,1997. Consequently,in many cases, they heard from the familiar person about each professionals called ST,PT,and OT at the first time.A small number knew comparatively by school guidance at a high school. When saying that existence of professionals was known from media, such as mass communications, many of them knew it from taking-an-examination guide books. The result of the data collection performed after deciding taking an examination of each special subject of study, was not able to receive suitable information,in many cases by ST compared with PT and OT.The situation after entrance in a special course,by self-evaluation of the student, many of the students answered“I think I must try hard, but does not work so much.”It needs the whole cultivation school and a professionals organization to do suitable public-relations activity, especially by ST.
