The purpose of this study is to suggest a framework for developing educational materials for “Building Sustainable Communities”. As a starting point for educational material development, this study created a table that arranges concepts including “natural environment, ecosystem, material cycle”, “industry, technology, economy”, “politics, administration”, “living, information, education, culture, art, his-tory”, and “leadership, intermediate groups, participation, and collaboration” in the rows, and “growth” and “improvement” in the columns. Using this table, two cases were analyzed and the following three conclusions were reached: it was possible to analyze and compare the cases within a common framework; this makes it a multi-purpose educational tool as the two cases analyzed here displayed synergy effects like “creating a two dimensional space encompassed by lines connecting the points identified”; and these cases are part of the education in social studies of elementary and junior-high schools.
