JOURNAL FREE ACCESSInfluences of additives, mainly octacalcium phosphate (Ca8H2 (PO4) 6·5H2O [OCP]), on hydraulic properties of an apatitic cement were investigated at 37°C. The apatitic cement was prepared by mixing α-Ca3 (PO4) 2 [αT] and CaHPO4·2H2O [B] at a molar ratio of 1 : 1. The hydraulicity of the cement was markedly lowered by the addition of solid basic additives such as MgO and ZnO. With increasing the amount of OCP addition in the range 5-15wt%, a setting time of 25 min for the cement was shortened to 18-10 min and a wet compressive strength of 17MPa for the hardened body after 24h in 0.9%NaCl solution was decreased to 12-9MPa. JOURNAL FREE ACCESSCrystallization experiments of calcium carbonate were carried out with a calcite seeding continuous stirred tank crystallizer, under the condition where no nucleation occurs. A new mathematical method, in which the population balance equation is used, was proposed to determine the growth rate of calcite from experimental data. Ca2+ and CO32- concentrations in the supersaturated solution were measured to calculate a supersaturation S defined as ([Ca2+] [CO32-] -KSP) /KSP. JOURNAL FREE ACCESSThis experimental study purposes contributing to high added-value application of glassy ground granulated blast-furnace slag, which is produced in Japan as much as 15, 000, 000 tons a year. For this purpose the author tried to use, as a concrete admixture, the granulated blastfurnace slag ground to 4, 000-14, 000 cm2/g of specific surface area by blaine for high-strength and high-durable concrete. JOURNAL FREE ACCESSICP-AES was applied to the determination of Ca, Mg, Fe, Ti, Zr, Hf, Ni, Cr and Y in high-purity mullite. A 0.100g sample powder with 5ml of (1+1) phosphoric acid and 1 ml of 38% hydrofluoric acid mixture was put into Teflon inner vessel in outer Teflon pressure vessel with a polypropylene jacket, and was decomposed by heating with a microwave oven for kitchen use. After cooling, the sample solution was diluted to 50ml with 10ml of (1+1) hydrochloric acid and water and analyzed by ICP-AES. The standard solutions for calibration contained 5% phosphoric acid, 0.8% hydrofluoric acid, 4% hydrochloric acid, 0.28mgSi/ml and 0.74mgAl/ml for matrices matching of the solution.
