An isolated vortex was generated between the two rotors which faced each other in a small test tank. The flow patterns in the circumference of a vortex were observed by means of the flow visualization technique. The vorticity distribution in the vortex core was the same as that of a viscous vortex model. The velocity distribution around the periphery of the vortex core was indicated by V-1/r
n where n>1. The mushroom-type vortices which appeared around a rotating cylinder were observed in the circumference of isolated vortex. The isolated vortex collapsed and became turbulent, soon after the mushroom-type vortices appeared in the circumference of it. The mechanism of generation of the mushroom-type vortices in the circumference of the isolated vortex seemed to be similar to that of a rotating cylinder.
